Hey, I know this thread is old, but I just retained an attorney yesterday for $1000 plus 299.filling fees and $274 for the debtor classes along with services after the discharge to help me get my credit back together. He's part of legalhelpers. Has anyone went through them for assistance? I only found one bad report against them on ripoffreport.com, but that was in a different location in a different state. I'd love to hear feedback. BTW, I tried to file on my own, or I should say through a prelegal service, We The People, but it was too much to deal with and the owners (it's a franchise) sold there location to a real a$$ who was no help at all! So I decided a lawyer would be the safest bet.

I pulled your post out, Queen, and made it a stand alone thread.
You're much more likely to get responses this way than tacked on as a Q at the end of an old thread.
Several Members have posted they used Legal Helpers and were satisfied with the service they received. I believe CPO is currently using them, although, CPO has just begun the journey.
You might try doing a search. Upper right. To read about other's comments.Filed Ch 7 - 09/06

I am not an attorney. My comments are based on personal experience and research. Always consult an attorney in your area to address concerns related to your particular situation.

I am using Legal Helpers, their Detroit Office, their isn't one local, so they're 4 hours away, but other than a couple of problems with their numbnut office staff, I've been very pleased. We retained them the first week of February, gave them $100, they were supposed to take the rest $1294 out of our checking account 2 weeks later. Well, it took until March 2nd before that happened because someone put my checking account in wrong in their computer.
Then yesterday I noticed that they entered my vehicles wrong into the database they used for appraisals. (BTW, the figures they come up with values is bogus, they are waaaaaaaaay too high).
Those are really minor, but I guess they could be big deals to anyone else. Definitely use that Toll Free Number they give you - it's a Godsend. They ALWAYS answer all my questions and for a while there I think I called every other day. My best advice is too keep on top of them - make sure you understand what's going on. They aren't the best communicator's you have to call them a lot of times. They haven't told me much about the process at all. Maybe I got a dud though.Petition Filed 6/4/07 :clapping:

Yes, I have retained the LegalHelpers attorney here in the DFW area. He appears to be knowledgeable although busy.Originally posted by Blackqueen View PostThanks so much SinkingFast, I really thought twice about my post after I did. I hope that CPO sees this post or anyone else that has used them. So far they have been very informative and helpful, but of course I just retained them YESTERDAY so their is no way to tell at this point.
Apparently, he had just lost his administrative assistant the day of my appointment...so he was slightly rattled.
I found him to be abit more informative than the other attorney's I consulted, and he actually knew some of the "new" details of the post 2005 code changes.
Two of the three other attorney's I spoke with did not, but that's not to say their paralegal's would not have.
The costs are slightly lower than my other quotes, but not enough to make a decision on. I chose him over the others because it was obvious to me that we would be working as a team and I would have extensive input into my petition. I'm kinda a control freak......
Plus, I was tired of looking for attorney's that could not keep their appointments.
Sink is correct though, I have just started the process. I have gathered ALL the data I need, determined what my sitrep actually is, and have representation on-hand.
I'm now waiting for the most advantageous time-frame to file.
P.S. They probably required you to sign up for their pay plan, they automatically deduct payments from your account? That plan can be modified with 72 hours notice, to any configuration you need. Don't sweat it.
I just paid my attorney a large lump sum outside of that plan. We just modified the pay plan. No bigee......
And, if this lawyer ends up being a dufus, you will hear it here first. I'm fully capable of hammering him with other representation, notifying the proper authority including the judges of the courts he works in and whatever professional organizations he's involved with.
I am not one to be trifled with......
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor, and I hope your attorney performs as you wish. Remember, knowledge is king, you are the paying customer and you have all the choices.
I'd say your in control....
Regards,
CPO

I live in the DFW area as well, Tarrant Co to be exact. While I did my Chapter 7 Pro Se, my domestic partner did his Chapter 13 with an attorney and he is a HUGE DUFUS. His Paralegal IS A TOTAL IDIOT. He got the data wrong on the forms 3 times, he seemed more interested in playing with new obviously new speakerphone than doing his job. We had to fight with the attorney after the third time and threaten to complain to the Chapter 13 Trustee about it before HE actually got the crap corrected and filed and then had the gall to get nasty about our attitude.Originally posted by CPO View PostYes, I have retained the LegalHelpers attorney here in the DFW area. We are considering converting my partner's Chapter 13 to a 7 in a few months and if we do, WE WILL HIRE ANOTHER ATTORNEY.

Used legal helpers in Ny
I used them and the lawyer asked me 2 weeks ago for my info. to do the credit class first. I gave him my info. and he's suppose to give me his # so I can do the class but he still has not gotten back to me. I am not going to use them .I need to know that they will be able to help me within 2/3 days of my calling- not weeks.I am looking into doing it myself now.

P.S. Macey & Aleman is a group practice...the attorney you actually interviewed with may not be the attorney that actually performs a specific action on your case...
You need to use the 1-800 number to get in touch with the managing partners office and discuss the totality of your particular case....

Yes - use that 800 number
CPO is right, the attorney we saw isn't even involved with our case, we use the 800 exclusively for assistance and they always answer my questions, always.

Thanks for the advice everyone, you especially CPO. I have contacted the 800 number everyday nearly since I discovered them. They are very helpful and have answered my questions in a timely manner. They even sent one of my creditors a letter to cease contacting family members about m debt and advising them that I am past due. My creditor was starting to call my family everyday and so far, no more calls as of yesterday.
But I will keep that in mind to contact them before contacting the attorney I met with to stay on top of my case.

For me, after searching around their site I found my attorney's email address, and that's been valuable to me. I haven't bombarded the guy
but I have sent a few emails with questions and at times he responded via email, other times he called in reply.
Not all of the lawyers with legal helpers are on there, but some are and email is just another option for communicating that people may find helpful, especially when phone contact isn't working the way you would like!
I've said here before, the attorney I have (which, as stated, may or may not be the one who attends my hearing next wednesday) is not great at being in contact, but email has helped me get more information and communication.
And, of course, we all know that the onus is on us. As stated here many times, even though these are people being PAID to work FOR YOU, it doesn't have the personal meaning or impact to their lives.
But no one should hesitate to call and keep calling as often as you feel the need to!
Another thing - my attorney did mention that they are completely swamped now because many people are getting tax returns and using those returns to hire lawyers to file bankruptcy! I'm sure other larger firms like legalhelpers are experiencing the same thing.

Good Experience
Me and my wife used Legal Helpers. I am not sure what people are talking about with using other attorneys. We went into their local office and met with an attorney who only worked for Legal Helpers. He was not a contractor. We were able to do most things over the phone and on-line, which was nice, as both me and my wife work and we have children. Whenever an issue arose we were able to contact their offices and have someone help us immediately. They also worked with us on a payment plan which was nice, as we didn't have the funds to pay them immediately.
I hope I dont have to, but if I needed help again, I would certainly contact Legal Helpers.
