Do It Myself or Get Lawyer?

I'm new here and have been procrastinating the process. It is clear that I'll have to declare bankruptch given my income and high debt. I don't own a house or a car. I do have a 401K from my last job, which doesn't add up to much. My main concern is if I should hire a lawyer for Chapter 7 or attempt to do it myself?

May I first suggest you read, read, and then read some more. Educate yourself on bankruptcy as much as possible. Then schedule 3-4 consultations with some local bankruptcy attornies in your area. Those are usually free and if you walk in there with some knowledge as to how everything works then you will have a greater benefit out of those meetings.

What is your gross income yearly? What state are you in? How many in your family? Those answers will help in even knowing whether or not you can even file a chapter 7, or if you would need to look into a chapter 13.

Typically unless you are willing to research and learn what you need to know to make sure your case runs smoothly I would suggest a using a lawyer. BUT, many people file on their own with no problems as well. It just depends on what makes you feel more comfortable. And of course if you can afford to hire an attorney or not.
