Roommates and Household size

I am getting my ducks in a row for a pro se (hopefully chapter 7) filing.

I have 3 roommates, and I understand that I must list what they contribute to the household expenses as income. We split the expenses 3 ways (we only have 3 incomes between us).

My question is, must I also count my roommates in my household size? Doing so would be beneficial to me, because if I filed as a 1-person household, the additional income from their part of the bills pushes me close to the median income for Illinois, and puts me at risk for an audit or for being forced to a Chapter 13.

The majority of the bills are in my name, and all of our names are on the lease. Everyone gives me the money, and I send out the checks/electronic payments.

Is there anyone here who has filed in similar circumstances? What did you do? I know I should take the free consultation with a lawyer, but I'm trying to get a handle on what I am dealing with. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. While I can't help with your specific question, I will suggest that you go online to nolopress.com and purchase their downloadable C7 book. It is written in plain English and will help guide you through the process. There is a list of the allowed exemptions for your state as well as Federal exemptions, plus sample forms. The downloadable version is about half the price of what the print version sells for in a retail bookstore. There is a freebie offered with every purchase. Take that too, because it is a layman's guide to simple legal matters, such as wills, etc.
