Just found out we're getting a bonus at work

...after we'd been told time and again in e-mails, conference calls and other company correspondence that because of the economy and slow sales we weren't getting any.

My amount is siginificant. Apparently mine, as opposed to others, was based on my work performance vs my salary (they figure 3% of your salary for the bonus). I think part of it might be due to making up for the missing raise I was supposed to have gotten for my new position.

How can I deal with this, since it will be a bigger than normal paycheck, and I had been telling SO that we couldn't go grocery shopping. Do l change my plans do the grocery shopping? I'm so tempted to go and blow it on dinner and a movie, but I don't know how it would look when I file that I used that money for that. We've pretty much been denying ourselves lots of things because of it. Hell, I even gave up a preorder for Fallout 3 because of this. I'd preorded it way before I even thought I would ever file.

I know it's a silly question and that I should use common sense, but I like the feedback from this site. I'm getting a lot more info than I have at other forums.

    Thanks all

ETA: The amount is close to 1k, but will be reduced after taxes by probably a good 250-300 dollars

    Blow it on hats!

Seriously though, I'd get Fallout 3...then send me a copy 'cause I can't afford it either.

If you want to "spend it", I would get necessities like groceries, household stuff (paper towels, soap, etc), get your oil changed in your car. Go to the dentist, get your eyes checked, new glasses or contacts if you "need" them. Slip your video game and some good stuff for a really nice home cooked meal while you are picking up groceries at Wal*Mart and I doubt the trustee is gonna give you to much crap over it.

LOL, thanks. SO said the same thing, and he really wants me to because it I had reserved the Special Edition with the neat stuff - DVD, lunch box, etc. He knows I've been denying myself lots of things just to make sure there's enough money for gas for my car and groceries.

I suppose I could withdraw cash and pay for it that way. He then tried to do the Jedi Mind Trick on me - you WILL buy Bender's Big Score. I told him I MAY after I look and see just how much I have and how much I am going to set aside for property taxes and filing fees for the bankruptcy.

We solved the gas problem by working at home and spending our free time playing WoW. The groceries were mostly solved by living close to home and "visiting" my parents on a regular basis around supper time.

        As for Bender...there's always bittorrent
