    Credit Check for Employment?

This issue concerns me a bit, especially since I'm about to begin my job search (layoff coming next Friday) -- it seems there are quite a few web articles out there warning folks that a bankruptcy, or actually any form of bad credit, could seriously and negatively affect finding a new job - or even keeping a current one. This used to be confined to jobs where someone deals with a lot of assets, such as banking, accounting, or working at a jewelry store, but now, something like a third of all employers are enforcing this type of hiring policy.

Basically, an employer weeds out applicants with the notion "Well, if you aren't responsible with your bills, you won't be responsible here", which I don't think is true (or fair) by any stretch of the imagination. So could bankruptcy really doom someone to a lifetime at McDonald's? If so, with this economy, they're bound to run out of positions soon...
