Student Loan experts: Does Defaulting Sallie Mae loan affect Stafford loans?

i have about 5000+ in Sallie Mae school loans(private), and close to defaulting soon. My other school loans I borrow via Stafford Loans is from Citibank school loans who doesn't force you to pay until school is done.

However, the Sallie Mae one - you have to pay even in school.

I was wondering if defaulting on the Sallie Mae one, if it would affect Stafford Loan elibility.

    let me explain it better

i have a private school loan that i am about to default. if i do, will it affect me getting federal (nonprivate)school loans? (stafford loan through Federal Direct or FFLEP)

Did a little googling, and this is what I found:

You must meet the following qualifications to receive Federal Stafford Loans:

Must be a U.S. citizen, national or U.S. permanent resident or eligible non-citizen
Must have not defaulted on a previous student loan
Must be attending at least half-time in a qualified school
Must have a valid Social Security number
Must be registered with Selective Services (males only)
      Must maintain satisfactory academic progress
Must complete FAFSA and any other paperwork required

There is a ton of info out there about these loans (and others) if you google it!

      Good luck
You can't have your cake and eat it too. But you can dip your finger in the bowl and lick the icing

The short and simple answer to your question is no.

Stafford loans are based upon financial need. Your credit report/credit score does not factor into it at all.
So the poor debtor, seeing naught around him
Yet feels the narrow limits that impound him
Grieves at his debt and studies to evade it
And finds at last he might as well have paid it.
