If one owes money to a lawyer for a matter not related to the bankruptcy, what happens to those fees after one files?

They are discharged in bankruptcy. However, if the case is something where you might receive a monetary award, the attorney still maintains their Attorney's Lien on the award (assuming the attorney has taken necessary steps to prefect the lien). You will be responsible for attorney's fees incurred after the date of filing BK
