    Hello all- newbie here

I just recently retired from the US Army. I never did the bills. My wife took care of them. When she started really stressing over bills I offered to pitch in and help. It was only then I saw the ruin that was our finances. Our bills were such that we were falling $1000 per month behind in our bills! I broke down like I've never broke down before. I've retained an attorney who explained that my situation is a very simple, straightforward Chapter 7. I'm scared to death. I feel like a failure. I'm sick to my stomach constantly. The tension in my body and mind is overwhelming. So, I found this forum and hope for some relief. Not a real great way to start out on a forum- but, hell, this is the Bankruptcy forum.

Thanks bkfiler. If it all works out as the lawyer said we'll be ok. I'm just petrified in the interim.

yep, every single one of us was too. that will go away after a bit. nothing wrong with BK anymore. its just a process. 99.999% of all BK go fine. not much to worry about.

read as much as you can. ask questions and keep on top of your attorney. other then that its a waiting game. thats the hard part.

          Hello Scout,

What you need to know, is that over 1 MILLION people file BK every year. The thing about this is, is that each and everyone has either made a mistake, or had unexpected things happen. We're only "Human" and as such we all suffer differently.

Worry not though. The bankruptcy laws were put in place to PROTECT us and to stop the abuses common in the past...

When you file, a great worry is lifted. The creditors CANNOT (Legally) do anything but sit and cry! (If they do something illegal, there is also $$$ recourse!! Depending on your desire to prosocute)

Be honest, be fair and be careful and you WILL feel better in a short time.

Best of luck and welcome to our little world.

The great thing? Insurance covered all damages AND the cost of cutting and wrapping at the local meat cutter...

                  Woohoo!

Well, let me tell you. We went the debt consolidation route 2nd.First we call the creditors and tried to work with them, NOT. We paid a debt consolidation company almost $35,000 in over 2 years. We could see very little difference in the pay off. They didn't send us an accounting of where all the money went or tell us how long we would have to pay that amount either. (started out to be 50 months) Then lightening struck our house and a few months later we had some hurricane damage. Insurance is great but they don't cover it all. We had no water etc. Had to wash clothes and selves elsewhere. Then they want you to get a repairman for an estimate. If it is ruined then get estimates from a couple places... What about missed work, mileage, loss of use of water etc... Forget that. We finally bite the bullet, took us 10 months from when we quit paying the dcc to file bankruptcy. The onl thing I wished we had done differently is file a lot sooner. It was funny that the cc called us and then wanted to settle. Not!!!!
We were discharged in August. May to then was heck, but we lived through it. The phone is quiet, good mail in the mailbox. I even know what cash loks like. Christmas was good, all paid for in cash. (use of cash makes you think twice about spending too.)
Get you some anti-nausea med., surf around this forum, ask questions and it will all be over soon. Promise.
I'll be watching, you may never know when or how, but I'll be there. I am there now....

                      Welcome to the forum Scout,

My situation is simialr to yours. We were falling behind every month as well (about $800 to $900), so I can relate. We were a straight forward Ch.7 as well. So far, everything has gone well. We haven't had any issues.....and the same goes for our personal lives. Actually, it's been better because there hasn't been any worries over the finances.

Let me tell you one thing, don't ever call yourself a failure, okay. You didn't fail.

Believe me, and the other members here as well, everything will get better.
