So I've been getting since last monday tons of letters from attorneys soliciting my business to file BK after i got a "abstract of judgment". I did received something to that effect at my job about a month or two ago. But nothing on an "abstract of judgment". It was some other court form stating they were filing for judgment. Anyhow, so now, i have made up my mind of filing for bk, but i got no $$$. I just filed my taxes (i was later advised i shouldn't have done this) and i'm getting a refund of approx $4,000. I'm hoping to use the refund $$ to pay for bk - getting an attorney. I'm a single mom, making about 36,000 a year. I own nothing, the only thing under my name is a car i purchased from a friend, and i'm using the rest of the tax refund to pay for that car. I'm approx. $15,000 in debt after getting a separation.
So what happens? How much time do I have to to file a bk before they try go garnish my wages? I'm trying to beat the clock, i just don't know how much time i have. Also, what about my taxes? Will they hold that too. I e-filed them, so i should be getting my refund within a week.
