How long does a bankruptcy case stay open?

I keep finding conflicting information. Some sources say six months, others say a year.
    Filed Chapter 7: March 19, 2012
    Discharged! June 28, 2012
    Closed! August 8, 2012

I assume you're speaking of a chapter 7. Discharge usually takes place before closing. In most cases, you are discharged 3 months from the date of filing. Some cases are discharged and closed at the same time. Some cases can take 6 months to a year to close after discharge.

What's the difference between dishcharged and closed? I thought at the end of the 60 days you were completely done?

Discharge means that the court says that you are free and clear of the debt, but closed means that they filed away your case forever (your paperwork and such).

It doesn't all happen at the same time? Why?
