Look at it this way-
Do you want/need to stay in NJ due to job/family/other reasons?
If yes and you can''t find a place cheaper to rent then you are no worse off doing a stay and pay after discharging the mortgage in bk.
If you can/want to leave NJ then find a place to move(rent) to before filing, get settled, then file.
That is what we did. it worked out just fine. Of course we didn't/don't want to buy again for the foreseeable future.
