Trying for an unemotional assessment

Let's seeeeee, now. By cold, hard calculations without emotions....

At the age of 60, I:

Am definitely worth more dead than alive, if one were to compare my life insurance benefits to potential earnings at my part time job or even Soc Sec benefits to come, if I live to 80 as have many of my relatives.

Once the Chap 7 BK is over, I will leave no debts for my tiny estate to have to settle except for mortgage on house.

BUT, my contributions to the mental health of friends and family with a hug and kiss, and some practical how-to advice in both the kitchen and the nursery is probably priceless. And helping pull my former SO and now dear friend out of his depression (taking care of his aging Mom) a little with a fish dinner at my place and a look at the sunset, is cheap therapy for him, and a useful role in life for me.

AND the devastation I would leave for my children having to explain to any future grandkids why their grandmother chose to be selfish and put her own momentary pain and a few bucks for them in front of these future positives, is something I wouldn't care to leave as my legacy.

A person who works for me dad just killed himself, for what appears to be financial problems. This young person is devistated, along with his 16 year old brother and 15 year old sister and early 50's mother. This guy chose to end life and leave a family behind with no answers. You know, this guy could have filed BK and still been there for his kids and wife.

Suicide is something people should not encourage others to do, or be selfish enough to do themselves. I think alot of folks who are in financial crisis have thoughts of suicide, part of depression that goes along with it. I know I was in a funk for several days and it did cross my mind, thinking of ways to do it without anybody knowing it was suicide. Fortunatly, I snapped out of that.

I think everybody should realize bk is a temporary problem, suicide is forever.

Yes, suicide is a terrible thing..... it touches family, friends, neighbors, etc.....

Many years ago a distant relative of mine took his life, and his entire family (5) with him...... left a note saying he could not leave them behind to suffer from his financial mistakes and there would be no one to take care of the ones he loved the most. They were in financial trouble and loosing everything they had.... NO ONE KNEW till it was all over......

Had he tried to file bankruptcy, NO....

Had someone known about the situation, they coud have helped him mentally, and emotionally thru this situation.....

HOW SAD, and to this day they are all still missed terribly......

Bankurptcy is so stressful..... its a emotional rollacoaster with lots of turns and bumps along the way...... it works on your mind, you think things you in your "right mind" would never think of...... (ex. stealing, robbing, suicide etc)....

So very hard to deal with by yourself....... EVERYONE NEEDS A SUPPORT SYSTEM DURING THIS TIME............

I missed that awful post by Queerguy, thank goodness! That was completely out of line and I am glad he's been banned. Suicide is NOT something to joke about! Depression is a very real illness and touches so many of us.

Hopeful, keep us posted on how you are doing. Life IS worth living and it does get better, I promise!

Suicide is NOT something to joke about! Depression is a very real illness and touches so many of us.

My freshman year in college was horrible in the dorms. It was an epidemic of attempted suicides--including my roommate. Definitely not something to joke about.

To get back to the poster's original question...the house will be a major hurdle to deal with and think that you will need legal advice. A lot will depend on how much equity is in the house and what the lender is willing to do for you.
Nolo is very respectable.
You "NEED" a good atty. I haven't heard anyone suggest this yet, but it used to be the first thing we suggested. Stop paying the credit cards and save that money to pay an atty.
Make certain that you do not use the credit cards for something that can be seen as fraudulent (taking out a new one to pay off others or writing a large check from one to pay others) or something deemed as frivolous (expensive vacations, gambling, etc.)
Good luck and at least talk to an atty. Most will give you a free consult.
Sorry your thread got hijacked by a jerk and talk about suicide.
Suicide....Been there...Thought about it a lot...Didn't do it.....One of my better decisions in life. If for nothing else, I avoided it because of the pain and major present and future traumas that it woould have caused my daughters.
