    intro

    Hi all!

After several months of panic and insomnia, I found my way here and I have already gained a lot of comfort from what I've read.

I'm 23 years old, married with an 8 year old (yes, I was young when I had him) and considering bankruptcy. I just completed my master's degree in social work and have not been able to find a job, and our debt has finally started to exceed our income. We have lived off one income for five years while I went to school, and used credit cards to buy groceries, clothes, and other things that we couldn't do after buying a home.

I never really thought our $20,000 was enough debt to file bankruptcy, but things have really gotten bad in the past few weeks. We've stopped paying credit card payments, so of course we're very popular now and the phone rings off the hook. We don't have car insurance because we had to choose between paying it or buying food. The sad thing is, if I would just find work, our income would double and we could get rid of all this crap. We actually got a consolidation loan to pay off all the cards, but since our income didn't increase, we were right back where we started within a year.

I don't even know if we'll be eligible to file since we know that our income will increase substantially soon. However, since we have no way to know how long that will take (i.e. I have no offers pending) I'm hoping we can work something out. It's depressing to be as young as I am and in this situation, but I don't know what else to do. I don't care what happens, I am totally finished with credit cards once this is over with. If we can't pay cash, we'll just have to suck it up.

I worry about a lot of things, and of course our families are trying to convince us not to file. At this point, though, my credit score (formerly perfect) is taking a beating and I would rather ruin it calmly than ruin it while fighting with bill collectors. Hopefully I'll continue to learn from all of you and be able to convince my husband that there are far worse things to go though.

Oh, the income requirement is NO problem for us. My husband made $26,000 last year - so much for state jobs being wonderful.

Thanks for the listings. I've seen both of those, but they're on the other end of the state. I'm far west, so there's a lot less to choose from and the few openings I've applied for are already given to someone, but the agencies list them as a formality. Rural politics make things hard...

        ^^^ I understand.

well read there is alot of info and u would also see how others jumped back on there feet afterwards reading others success stories here is what helped me make the decision. Back in the day (since im in ur age group) BK was looked down on but so many people have done it nowadays that once u get back on track afterwards it really dosen't affect u. But im fron NYC so maybe out here things are on a faster paced and almost anything is acceptable where as an other places values and lifestyles are much different so things are still frowned on.
