Anyone desperate enough to need these loans should just apply for govt assistance as opposed to getting caught in the payday loan trap feeding more banksters.
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT: The person I speak of, is prime for section 8 housing. Her pride has all but by minutes will bring her down. I have preached and expressed my opinion a multitude of times. She always has a reason not to do what she should have long ago. Yes I do care but you cannot lead a Camel to water unless you wish it to spit on you. (Camels spit).

Banka, you been 'round long time. You have seen this scenario. I don't know what to do as now even those of us who are fairly well off and heeled, are in fear of what is to come. A person like my project person will surely die. I do not have resources for her, nor the time. I go up to TN to make money from my brother (who is terminally ill) to do his bidding and supply my materials so we can again live in our house.

I doubt that once finished I will have five years to enjoy it. I should be fishing right now instead of fixing.

However, I do not dismay as for helping my brother is a need I wish to do, and helping this person, I cannot do much more. I am dismayed but I look at what has been good for others. 'Tis the way it is. 'Hub

Goodness, gracious. I had no idea that posting this article would cause such a stir, but I do confess that the so-called 'friend' and her attitude was in the back of my mind when this news article made it's way across my news feed, and I decided to post it. If this post and the resulting discussion prevents even one person from going the 'pay day loan' route, that is a good thing.

      Thanks to all!

For what she has in boxes she could sell at flea market prices and pay her taxes. You did catch that this is the second three year default in land taxes. If the mortgage holder does not escalate the mortgage, the place will be sold for taxes. All she treasures in boxes she cannot find her things.
Yes, I did catch the entire mortgage issue - unbelievable. I too have an acquaintance that is the same as above. She is in her 60's, lived a silver spoon life, has never had to work in her life, servants 24/7, and the family estate has been in her family since the 1700's. Mansion in disrepair and all 35+ rooms are stacked to the hilt with a cross between treasures and trash; small pathways to get through. Always vetching about not having any money *eye roll* then calls me to line up dealers / auctioneers, etc to get appraisals (we used to deal in antiques). I did that - provided high-end names of appraisers / dealers that I've dealt with personally over the years, many of whom are on the Antiques Roadshow - in the end, she then refused to sell anything. Just last week got another phone call with a 'proposal' for us - if we sold the items, she'd give us commission. I politely refused and again directed her to the experts I provided to her last year. In the end, she will never sell one item, not even get rid of the trash nor dead critters that are in the house... (dont ask how I know this...LOL). Yuk.

I cannot stand when someone cries "poor mouth" - you know the type - $200K in the bank, yet vetch they "only have $20...I'm broke." please... when I say I've only got $20 ...that means its all I have, period. Like you (and many others) I too have the "savior" complex, however I've learned over the years to say No. At this rate I'd rather save an animal (food shelter, medical) than people due to the overwhelming amount of lies and schemes.... and how sad is that? I used to assist panhandlers on the street until the last time when I handed them food and they cussed me out. Uhm.. didnt your sign say "hungry..." ?? No more...

Well Pandora, this one is truly poor. Not the issue. She had a chance with two houses. One she sold in a mortgage and I don't know what she cleared, and then her Mother's house was free and clear excepting back tax. Now I don't know if her Mother ran up the tax bill, she was quite old and a bit in dementia, or, it could be the subject I am talking about. In any event, the NEED for a 17K mortgage she says, was to redeem a 1.8K tax bill. Then she says she paid all her back bills, yet I saw new toys around that time. Laptop, Blackberry, etc. Then, knowing her income vs accounts payable, did not plan on a budget and let THREE more years go by? That is called delusional. Now time to pay the Piper, and a big S.O.S. to all her friends and family. NOOO, Too late on this one. I'm still steaming about losing a car that I gifted her and she broke it the first day.

I am so pizzed as I replaced for Mrs. that old car that ran perfectly well, with an old Volvo that is nothing but problems. I told the friend about the damned light being a bad sensor, and you would think a person would check a dip stick before adding three quarts to an engine that is full at four quarts. Of course it blew the engine.

Here is something I did not tell you: She apologized when we came to tow the car back home, yet she had the NERVE to say; "I really need a larger higher car like a van or truck to step up into rather than down into" for her arthritis. Like putting an order in for the next free car. Talk about Mrs. being pizzt after her car was blown up, there was so much blue smoke in my car going home I had to stick my ears outside of the car. I never heard words like that from her. 'Hub

Great post. Some people can't be helped.

It is not possible to save some people, as when we had money and no worries, I gifted this person many a hundred dollar bill to cross some financial bridge of the time. Mrs. and I gave her a nice running car that Mrs. owned, with great air conditioning and perfectly serviced. I told her to ignore the low oil light that comes on as it is a known bad sensor. Well the first day she had it, the low oil light comes on. One quart. It came on again. Two quarts. It came on again. Three quarts and engine blows the rings out and destroys the valves in three cylinders. Mrs. owned it and drove it for four years, this person owned it for one day. Would anyone here not pull the oil dipstick and look? The low oil light is not the low oil pressure light. So, a car given with the value of about 3K went to the scrapper for $260 in metal weight, as Mrs. cried all the way to the scrapper.

I am posting this for one reason. Those of us who have realized our "new start" let us never get back to where we were. I don't believe this person will take me up on bankruptcy due to pride. She is NOT an uneducated person and is usually brilliant, but like many of us in the past, cannot control the "WANT" over the "NEED".

How about getting rid of the $100 smart phone monthly plan.

              • Take another job or volunteer for extra hours at work.

DO people who give such advice realize how unrealistic most of this is? IF you work on salary, there is no OT, if you don't, there probably isn't these days. Get another job - I have several "extra jobs."

Sell unneeded items. Sure...that'll rake in lots of cash.

Sorry to be cynical, but most of this most of the time is unrealistic and to me, "flippant" "advice."

You can do one last act of kindness by adopting the three critters.

Jacko, if you are meaning the three cats this lady has, we have four of our own. Her three are old and inside cats (no nails) and would not last long on our property. My Mother in her old age became a "cat lady" with 63 cats. She could not say no. When she died I had an overwhelming problem disbursing so many cats. No pound would have them so I had a real problem.
