    Good news... relief

Well, wife is finally going back to legal work after a twenty year Hiatus. She was hired by the State in a very nice capacity. She wiil be in the Florida Retirement System like me with excellent benefits and finally HOLIDAYS OFF.

Her present job was called by the Department head that offered her the job (she has tentatively accepted, but can back out before Friday) and they gave her a glowing recommnendation and said "well you know we are going to fight to keep her". They immediately doubled her salary, made her full time and gave her some perks.

    Decision:
Right now she is waiting to complete the criminal background check and should be ok'd from Tallahassee by Friday.
The Salary from the State is now lower than her job but the benefits are 600 times better but she tops at about 51k in her class.
The Title and Department at the State look really wonderful on any resume.
it is not Criminal, her dream
The Office is gorgeous, low key and free parking an a secure tower.
She is "special risk" under FRS and accrues a higher percentage than I do per annum for FRS benefits.
There will be some "free OT" when there are trials. She is salaried. She is familiar with the work and says trials will be few, she knows the nature of this particular job.
WE WILL BE ABLE to move ANYWHERE in Florida and she will be employed. There will be no question about this, what she is doing is very specialized and necessary statewide.
She loves legal work but left to raise her family and be away from Criminals and pressure. She did several hours of work for the new folks with exhibits, court papers and the like and they were very impressed. Plus, she speaks fluent Spanish. Her friends and bosses from years past are still around and two are judges, she has always been drawn to this. They all know the same people.
She will be HOME on holidays, YAAAAAAY!!!!

    Other hand,
    Loves her bosses
    loves her new salary
    close to home
    hates the nepotism
tired of interviewing and rejecting low lifes, "have you ever been convicted of a felony" and in SoFla the answer is usually "yes", "please explain". They deal with peoples CC info. Her bosses are really nice people, even the person who is trying to lure her away said "it sounds like you work for nice people"

The key issue with me is that we will be able to move to the West Coast or North Florida when i retire. I have ten years MAX left. I will now not have to pay Insurance and will continue with my present plan, that will add over $1000.00 per month to my retirement income. we will then build a summer home in TN and not a full residence and I can stay in Florida in a better area than SoFla down the road, with more land. It has been my dream to be able to stay here for the weather but also to have my home in Tennessee. The problem is that I am used to Florida and there are definite benefits here that TN does not offer, so it is a back and forth issue between TN and Fla. most people living here have no idea of all the things that are offered, and i like the firearms and self defense laws here much better than most states.

So, sorry for the long post. they are normal for me, but we are in a quandry. She has accepted the job with the State, pending the paperwork OK but also has to give her bosses a definite answer as she does still have the opportunity to change her mind before Friday.

sorry, that post looks more like a ramble, it's a win-win at this point no matter her decision. no OT at work right now, off tuesday/wednesday. Have to stay put because #2 son is IN BED, ZONKED nursing his hernia surgery. bored to the point of suicide... can't play with the other kids today!

The reason we can stay in Fla is because she will probably work 'til 62, and go into DROP at 57. Inusrance would then be provided by her job, not mine and Florida offers the same Insurance benefits that Miami-Dade County offers. She will have first dibbs in any other County in her capacity without a pay decrease. If she elects to go without Insurance right now since my job is presently providing it she will also recieve a $160.00 pay bonus bi-weekly, so it may offset the lower pay.

        Robivi3,

Sounds like you may be able to the "have the best of both worlds"....... life in the Sunshine state and a "mountain retreat" also..................

Job sounds exciting for the Mrs.'s............ I imagine she is ready to do something more interesting in life...... sometimes "its just time" to move on to other things in life..... Many jobs can be very boring at times..... No challenge, just hum-drum jobs.....

What ever she decides, I'm sure you will support her in her ventures...... you strike me as the kind of man that does.....

Yes the state jobs offer many perks and benefits that other jobs do not......

Let us know what she decides..............

Sorry to hear about the #2 son and his surgery....... Hope he starts feeling better in a few days....... those hernia's can be rough and the surgery is uncomfortable..... (a friend had it done a couple of weeks ago)...... grown man..... he whined like a "whipped pup"...... but I'm sure he was very sore........

Tell #2 sone to "hang in there"............lay around while he can.... it won't last forever........ then back to school/work.....

Well, wifey got the call yesterday so now we can "talk shop", she's on the Gov't. Payroll. Been after her to do it for years. Oh well, time for another break... now, next goal, six years she'll be vested, just hope the State budget holds out.

Actually neither of us is the "eternal coffe break" type, unfortunately we both have a conscience. She is thrilled at the level of education she will once again be working with. She is very thrilled because she is back in the advancement world and not stagnant. The bene's are equal to my job but not as pricey, she is looking now to furthering her education. She is saying goodbye to folks she really loves though. they offered her a better salary than the starting pay at the new job with 3-8% raise guarrantee yearly but it is time to go as now she can resume her career since the boys are nearly grown. We went without and for many years she did not work and I have worked (up until 1998) two jobs and OT sometimes simultaneously. She was part time until this week.

I told her wow, I'll be retiring in afew years and driving you to work! She said "well, you wore yourself out for many years and your body is tired and needs a rest, you took care of us and in afew years you can enjoy yourself!"

But this is a woman who went to work part time six years ago because i needed a new vehicle, she was tired of me nursing the oldies along. Now finances are easing as far wage increases and hopefully we have retained some wisdom through stupid mistakes. I can lay off the OT some for now, a little. Been going seven days since Sept. trying to bump up my AFC for the best five years.
