Wow.I just got an estimate to have a few holes and cracks in house Foundation filled.

I just had a guy come over yesterday and give me an estimate for some masonry work on my home's Foundation. There's only a few small holes and some cracks that need to be filled in.He gave me an estimate of $635!
Isn't that kind of high?I could see if he had to do extensive work a on the foundation but there's only a few holes and a few cracks.
    Why so much??

You could probably take care of this repair yourself with a trowel and a small bag of cement that you mix in a wheelbarrow. Wheel around the house and slap the cement into the cracks and holes, trowel flat and let dry for a few days with no rain. If there are areas in the sunshine, shade them so that the cement doesn't dry too fast.

This will cost you a LOT less than 600 clams, and you'll have some fun, too. Immortalize yourself, your kids, your hubby and your pets by using the leftovers to make a "stone" with your hand/paw prints in it. Add some colored glass marbles and broken crockery, and voila! Heirloom!

Got to be careful with foundation cracks. Some just can't be plastered over. If the cracks are running north, south, they could be foundational and need to be chipped out some and then filled in.

Rule of thumb is to get 3 estimates on any home improvement project.

          I was gonna suggest that.

Get some more people to come look. Partly for more prices and partly to know if you have a "cosmetic" situation.

If it's truly cosmetic, then do what Henrietta suggested. By a small bad go QuickCrete, a trowel, and perform a DIY repair.

If it's more serious, then you might need to save up the money to fix it right.

As usual, if a woman is hunting getting some work done.......a man is standing there waiting to "take her to the cleaners" - because she's a woman.......( Really, they all (well, most of them) think we're dumb anyways)!!!

Be sure and get seveal estimates and take it from there. If its strictly cosmetic - do it yourself or have a friend/neighbor help you....

Tradewiz50, It's pretty much common knowledge that women are victims of pricing gouging from businesses such as: Auto Repair, Home Improvement, Electronics, etc. And as a result of this, it's very wise for anyone (especially) women to get more than one estimate, or to shop for prices.

Furthermore, I am going to ban you for 7 days for wasting time in this thread to simply, incite/instigate a quarrell with a moderator. More importantly, you already created a history for yourself here as being a trouble-maker.

FOLKS - NO MALE BASHING INTENDED in my comments - Sorry if it came across that way in the posting.....didn't mean to offend anyone!! I have the highest respect for men until they give me a reason not too..............

Only meant to state that women who have to hire someone to do work for them often get took advantage of, took to the cleaners, and often thought of as being dumb - and won't realize they are getting "short changed"......

If a man is hired to do work around my home - he is paid well for his time and efforts. I do not short-change a man that sweats all day in my backyard hauling concrete or doing work that I can no longer physically do. He expects to be paid well for his labor and I expect the same courtsey when I have to hire someone to help me....

Men and women BOTH take advantage sometimes of the older generation. And folks do play on these traits. You hear of "scams" all the time involving older folks...... money scams, investment scams, hire for work scams, etc. Men and Women both play on the fact that older folks are easy targets......they forget things, can't remember if they wrote a check or not, often give someone a blank check and ask them to fill it out, etc.....
And usually these are older folks who have "NO ONE" to help them in their daily activities.....

No offense intended folks - I'm a woman, and I LOVE MEN!!!!!

And talking about being offended - I don't like being called "a dumb blonde" either!!!!

So there are 2 sides to "that street"...................

Actually minnymouth isn't far off the mark. That's why I always get multiple estimates.I was just getting estimates for having my cellar cleaned out.I had three guys lined up.First one said: $320 and bragged he was the best price in town; the second one said $310 (maybe more); and the third one said $250 and he asked if I think that's a reasonable price??.
Guess which one I hired? And I plan on not only clearing 1/2 of it out before he gets here I also plan on giving him $280 for doing the job and for not trying to take me to the cleaners.
Wether your a woman or a man it's a good idea to get multiple estimates on any job you want done.
I went to one Mason and did not like his price so I've got another lined up for next week and I will also line up another estimate too.
Doesn't hurt to shop around no matter what you want done.
The best price does it for me every time.
