Gas prices, can someone explain?

We have one car, a 2005 Toyota Camry. Lately a half tank of gas has been running us around $35. Gas is $2.86 a gallon. If we have an 18.5 gallon tank, it should be no more than $47.00 to fill up right? So why is it running around $65? Ive watched the attendant to make sure were were not getting ripped off too. (Cant pump your own gas in NJ BTW)
Is this something to do with ethanol? doesnt make sense. Maybe Im just not getting something here.

BTW, they say by next summer we will be at $4.00 a gallon!!!!! Pretty soon they will be selling those Suburbans and Yukons at half retail perhaps? Maybe not though. Nobody seems to want to give them up. I saw to new escalades this week in my 'hood and the soccer moms have yet to be fazed by this price hike. Still running and running.

Is tax included in the "per gallon" price or added later? Is there a service fee tacked on?

On the receipt, does it say how many gallons that were pumped into the car?

And $4 per gallon by next summer, lol, how about, by this Christmas (at least on the west coast anyway).

first of all - 18.5 gallons times $2.86 a gallon comes out to $52.91 - not $47, as you say. And read the pump sign if there is a difference between a "cash only" gallon and a "credit card" gallon.
Here in the Sacramento, CA there are a few stations that have both, a cash price, and a credit card price. The credit card price is usually 15 cents a gallon more.

Luckily I don't use much gas because I commute to work using public transportation, BUT when I have to drive to my Mom and Dad's about 45 minutes away, I watch the needle go down and think, "Dang, that's money right there." LOL.

lol...yeah my quik calculation in my head is off a bit. I always always use cash, never credit. (Dont have any anyhow!!) Im going to ask for a reciept this time. The tax added on should still not be that high though. My husband & I currently have an 85-110 newspaper delivery route from 3:30am to 5:30 am and its eating up so much gas from stop and go I doubt we will keep it if we go above $3 a gallon. Plus its been around 26-35 degrees and COLD. It was a good thing for holiday money but its a no go on gas. Cuz every paper has to be on the doorstep!
You poor west coasters. I have always wanted to live in San Fran even for a month but talk about cost of living..eek! Makes NJ look cheap.
