About four months ago, I came across an article:
stating that AT&T had decided (persuaded by the government, I think) to offer DSL for $10/month until December 29, 2009 for people in 22 states. There is a one year contract required, then it is month-to-month @ $10/month.
You have to be an AT&T Residential customer to receive the deal, and it is for new DSL customers only. At the time, we we're paying $45+/month for Road Runner (5MB Speed) PLUS $30+/month for a home phone we never used. I should mention that we have the home phone only to have a number to write down whenever we fill something out that 'requires' a phone number. There is no phone hooked up to it, just a $15 answering machine.
My wife and I have had the same cell phone numbers for seven years and have never had an unwanted call. (This has been a REAL blessing when we stopped paying creditors before filing for bankruptcy.)
Anyway, the DSL. At first, I was apprehensive as the speed is only 768mps (max) down/128mps up. Could we really go from 5MB to 768mps? Then, I found out how much basic phone service from AT&T is. If you don't have long distance, caller ID or any other junk, it is about $15/month. My total bill for internet and phone, including the taxes, would be $31.38/month.
What the heck...We decided to try it.
Four months later, I must say I'm impressed. First, it has worked perfectly. The speed is always steady at about 650mps down/285mps up.
Second, I never realized how little speed matters if you don't upload lots of stuff or download videos or movies. Although we use the internet a lot, we do very little of these activities, just basic surfing (CNN, a few basic online games, banking, etc). The 650mps speed we receive is more than adequate.
I am posting this here because for many, it may be a great way to save a few extra dollars every month in their already stretched budget. It has sure been a help for us!
Finally, AT&T does not make this easy to find. First of all, you can't call and ask for it. It is available to order online only. Also, they don't list it with all their other DSL plans. You have to use this link:
AND go through the whole process and THEN make sure you find a link that says something like "view ALL internet services/plans".
Remember, this offer is only available in selected states and requires a one year contract, but to get a whole year of decent speed 'net for $120 seems like a bargain (at least it is for us and for what we use it for!).
Good luck and happy surfing!
