I've said this before and I'll say it to you again--stock up on food and other essential items as much as possible, prices are only going to go higher. Grow as much food as you possibly can, even if you have only a patio or a small space to grow a few tomatoes. Don't only think of your own gullet when stocking up, make sure you have tradeable items that other people will want. If you're in a good financial position, drill a well on your property and get off the grid with solar or wind power, heat and air conditioning.

The only available option to keep this country from going broke is to completely redesign our energy infrastructure, which will take years and cost trillions of dollars.... time and money that we don't have.

Pizza we can do it but the American People must think long term instead of short term. To balance the budget you need to cut 20% off of all budget items (this includes domestic, foreign, military etc). To pay off the debt you probably need 50% reduction to do it in a reasonable time frame (10 years). To do that and support an government subsidized energy program you'd need something like a 70% reduction. However government subsidized energy is not the best solution all Congress needs to do is remove the draconian processes of the EPA and Department of Energy and companies could build new energy facilities. Folks also have to get away from the not in my back yard syndrome or America is doomed.

Jr Scott..I like what you said abou the "Not in my backyard" syndrom. VERY well put!! On many many levels.

They want to just deny a public transit system in NJ not long ago that would have helped hundreds of thousands get to and from work, school and play because it would ruin the charactor of the suburbs. This alone would take many cars off the road and save gas.

Around here the rich are not suffering AT ALL yet three towns over everyones broke, on food stamps and slashing gas tanks. My daughters school mates families are still spending, vacationing, and driving around in huge cars and SUV's oblivious to it all. "What recession?" I live in a six figure area. We are hoping to get out, as we live in a small house on the edge of town but have to pay the high taxes.

My electricity has been surging all day due to everyone having the central air on high blast. I have my windows open!! I even hung my laundry outside. Your not supposed to do that here, its unsightly.

My nephew and BIL BOTH had full tanks of gas stolen last week. BOTH had locking gas caps. Robberies have been on the up.

I agree that in an extreme energy crisis like the one we have today it is important to drill, drill, drill to prevent an absolute calamity... but if (god help us) we could pull ourselves out of it we need to go for developing all possible alternative energy sources.. think of the job creation, it could likely pay for itself.. what we absolutely DON'T need is to repeat our "oh good, everything's fine now" attitudes of the 80's when prices went down.. by doing so, we simply postpone another energy crisis -- with an even higher population and another influx of energy inefficient vehicles & homes... GASP!
