Marine HELP!

As some of you know my son is in Boot Camp at Parris Island with the USMC. I need to send about 100 protien bars to him ASAP. Even Sam's is extremely expensive (they are in the medicine aisle). Does anyone know of any place online that has a really good price so that I can have them shipped.

The Marines is somewhat different from the Army, care packages need to be Platoon size. I just sent 800 cough drops.

Kim Komando does a lot for this kind of thing. As a computer nerd, I love her weekend show. www.komando.com and that being said, send this request to her and she may be able to air this. Also, go to Sam's or Wal mart manager, explain the situation, and ask if any "damaged" product may exist that they would be willing to donate. Explain that if they have this, you would be pleased to mention them on a World Wide Forum.

If you mean order online & have it directly shipped to your son, you should be able to find a decent wholesale place that will sell you 100 bars & ship it directly to him. Or do you want them to come to you first? Then you send them through the post office?

I know what you are saying because Sams really does not offer wholesale pricing.

If you can find someone online to buy from wholesale & also ship them (overseas?), that will be the tricky part.

hi everyone and much thanks, actually don't thank him yet! he is still in Basic. Thye request certain items but everything must be Platoon size, no individual care packages allowed.

I actually found some on ebay from good sellers (far from expiration) and am having them shipped. I would appreciate any advice from folks in the know.

I think it is a way to guage support and involve parents without phone calls and such which aren't allowed. he is mastering the art of letter writing, a great habit. He still uses terms like LOL, guess that is our modern age. I will approach Sam's as Angelina said, that's a good idea. Alos considering small weekly orders from the online sites you guys listed after the initial 100. Nothing is kept to the recruit and no personal items are allowed. The items are kept in storage and distributed by the Senior DI according to my son. I may have used "care package" a little loosely, vasically it saves the Corps money I guess! I also think they use this like I said to involve people and create the Marine culture. Ain't no such thing as "Army of One", "Marines of One" and such and this lets the parents know that little Johnny who in his generation got soccer trophies just for showing up (as my kids did, in fact you'd think they'd won the Triathalon) and got a "kindergarten graduation" and sixth grade "graduation" and other such sillineass has now got to have a "we" and "us" mentality.

This is a new culture to me. My Dad never got the Army Air Corps out of him, his habits were born there. I was never in the Military (birth defects) but wanted to be like crazy. I am glad for the boy and hope I still have my connection to him, I know he will be changed. Most of my male and a bunch of female relatives have served.


I will appreciate any advice, he will be in Aberdeen Maryland for MOS and one of my Co-workers brothers (25 year man) will likely be one of his instructors. He met his DI before he went to PI and his longevity in DEP preceded him. I imagine he is pressed a little more since he had a reputation going up. Probably made life harder!

You have a few dud Marines here and there...but this is primarily a very true statement.

Reminds me of a funny story...

My husband was in the Marines for 7 years - Viet Nam and all.

When he was in basic at Parris Island, he asked me (his girlfriend at the time) to send him some gum, which I did, in a greeting card, carefully taping each piece uniformly. Well, during mail call (and I am sure its way different now), the DI called him up and gave him a hard time over the card and ordered him to open it in front of everyone. There was the gum. The DI said awww - that was so nice - and then invited him to go ahead and enjoy it right then and there - all 5 pieces - uh - wrapper and all!

But he would definitely say "Once a Marine, Always a Marine"

I get about three letters per week. He keeps drawing 3rd shift firewatch. I have no sympathy. He is now living all the shiftwork I did in one compressed time, crawling under buses on I-95 to get them rolling and crawling under trains in the gravel in the sun (today, changing blower motor brushes) to get them in service quickly. Being in many, many dangerous situations in rainstorms, hurricanes and swimming in 8 feet of water (no joke) in the October 18 2000 rainstorm at Hialeah Rail Station when the tow company tried refusing to tow a bus out of the lake created by the rain, we hooked up two GMC's with chains to try and pull it out. Me and another guy had to swim under the water to hook the chains to the frame. We bathed in alchahol on returning to the garage. The supervisor lost a Dodge pickup (water over the roof) trying to rescue the operator. It was driver error but in SoFla sometimes the puddles look like puddles and they are lake deep.

I am glad that he is suffering some, it will do him good. I miss him, he is the greatest kid, always firm in his church commitments, would even walk the tow miles if I didn't drive him just becuse he had to run lighting or sound or had made a commitment. Took the bus many times to DEP and only missed one PT session in the 13 months. he has been a pleasure to raise, a little lazy, hammered by his brothers to the point of exploding one night and never being hammered again. I didn't cuss in those days and he uttered the first cuss words in my home, "you "F"ing A**holes!" and the fist flew. I never said a word to him about it, except to laugh much later because he earned their respect that night. Wonderful kid, now a wonderful man.

I hope we will still connect as I never served, my Dad did, both Grandfathers (my Dad's father under the Kaiser pre WWI) and all my uncles, some cousins and aunts.

21 days and my boy is a Marine. No phone calls or photos but letters have shown a distinct and noteworthy change in thinking and habits. HHM you would find some differences, the SDI is online at times. Not for specifics, just general "they did well" updates. The old ways are still there also, sleeping in the poncho liner and such. Some people have taken photos on other forums but you have to be a member with approval to see them (I am) and cannot identify a person or send them to the recruit or publish them, thanx 9/11.

He is in 3rd Battalion in the swamps but near the range. He seems upbeat and says he loves what he is doing. He'l see the politics when he is older, let him start his life stories now. This is his day.

We are going to stay in Beaufort so I hope to see the fort that was assalted in "Glory" and such, sorry to simplify history and would love to see the CSS Hunley if it is on the way.

I'm sure you will. Your obvious pride in and respect for him is a beautiful thing, and it shines through every post. He's got to know that many (possibly most) of his friends never get that from their fathers.
