Everyone thinks it is time for the big one to hit here, hopefully they are wrong.
They talk about the Big One every time there is an earthquake any where in the world anymore. They are saying 99% chance of it happening within the next 30 years. But where it will happen, no one knows.

It has been a long time since a big one hit. The last real big one was in 1999 and it was a 7.1. There was a 6.0 in 2004.

Do you happen to remember where the 7.1 hit? Since moving here I've become interested in learning about the fault lines. I find it all oddly fascinating.

          It was in Ludlow.

There was also a 7.2 in 2005 in Northern CA.

We're less than 5 miles from the epicenter! I was out of state yesterday, but came home to stuff all over the place. A few cracks in the sidewalks, but nothing major, thank goodness!

Funny, I live near the mountains and felt a little "jolt" followed by a bigger "jolt"...nothing big....but I didn't realize the phone line were out including the cells. A couple hours later I turned on the TV and it was all over the news...Breaking News!!!! Anyway, when the phones finally worked, I had everyone calling, worried because they couldn't reach me! That's living in Calif for you.....just used to it I guess......
I'm glad there was no major damage and no one injured.

Now they are saying due to yesterday's earthquake that the San Andreas fault may cover more ground than originally thought.

If you're in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator.

If you're outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you.

If you're driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses. Try to get clear of trees, light posts, signs and power lines.

If you're in a mountainous area, beware of the potential for landslides. Likewise, if you're near the ocean, be aware that tsunamis are associated with large earthquakes. Get to high ground.

If you're in a crowded public place, avoid panicking and do not rush for the exit. Stay low and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms.
Thanks Cali. I agree with all but am getting such a variance of opinions for people at work that it boggles my mind. Getting under the desk is the major point of argument. That's the wisdom I grew up with but when my mom went through an earthquake years ago and was on the 51st floor of a downtown Los Angeles building, I told people she had gotten under her desk and people were laughing about it. I thought, WTF, what else would you do?

Then yesterday, a bunch of people at work were saying, no, you don't do that anymore.

I don't think clearly during an earthquake. I've been known to freeze and not react at all. Yesterday, when the building started shaking, I got up from my desk and peeked around the corner. I saw three co-workers and one yelled at me to get in a doorway so I did. In hindsight, this was really stupid, because the doorway had a glass wall adjacent to it. Also, who's to say the door isn't going to spin around and slam your head off?

Another thing, when the thing stopped rolling, we went down the emergency stairs and exited the building. I was just followed them. No one was panicking but I think I felt better not being alone. The scariest part of that whole process was going down those stairs and out onto the street even though the shaking had stopped by then.

A lot of people stayed in the building. I'm not sure that was the right thing to do either.

There was one guy who was riding the escalator and never even felt it. He said he saw a bunch of people leaving and thought it was weird but he just continued back to his desk.

I was taught to get under a desk. My kids were taught that as well and they aren't that old. So I don't know why they would say not to do that.

It takes a lot to make me scared. My sister thought I was crazy because I told her I was on my rooftop deck and the house started moving and I just stayed there.

Wow, glad you are OK. I was in downtown Los Angeles in a high rise taking a course for another useless state license.

We were rolling for a while. One girl in class said that this was her first day in California as she lives in South Carolina.

                              Welcome to California.

I will say one thing though. Cell Phones are USELESS in an emergency like this. Couldn't make a call out or get one in.

They need to work on this.
Very fortunate in the grand scheme of things but have learned my lesson.
