Selling an old washing machine for scrap?

My grandparents gave me their old dryer as I am a broke and humble college student just getting started and getting married on the 24th of this month. My Grandma ALSO gave me their washer, that needs more repairs to it than it's worth. Which is a pitty because it's a maytag. She suggested I scrap it, and put the money toward a new washer.

But to get to the point, my question is: After my bankruptcy is done in December, I was thinking of scrapping the washer that's just hanging out in my basement. But would any scrap yards be interested in it at all?

Has anyone had any luck or experience with a similar situation?

We have carried old scrap iron fencing and other assorted junk to our local scrappers w/o a problem. I have seen old appliances there. I don't think there would be any problem.

Even if you only make two or three dollars off of it, that's two or three dollars you didn't have before, and perhaps have kept it out of the landfill.

Yep, take it in and scrap it out!!! DH scraps all the time, it's how we get extra spending money. He usually scraps aluminum and copper. If you have several scrapyards to choose from, call 1st and see who is giving the most.

A friend of mine who was selling her house recently gave me the refrigerator that was there, which is so much better than the one I had. The guy I hired to transport it also took my old one for free because he could make a little extra money scrapping it out.

Scrap is big business these days. I wish I'd know that before tossing my banged up brass bed frame a few years back.

When I bought my house, the guy who did the appraisal made sure to point out to me that part of the siding on my house is newer vinyl siding, while another portion is older metal siding (although they match well). Said if I ever get the older metal siding replaced to be sure to scrap the metal and not just let the contractor haul it away for me unless they also gave me a discount for letting them keep the old siding because it was worth hundreds of dollars in scrap. I would have never thought about it, probably would have thought the contractor was doing me a "favor" by hauling off the old siding, heck, they may have even gotten away with charging me for it if my appraiser hadn't pointed this out to me! My stepdaughter is in the process of scraping a trailer she used to live in, is a little disappointed to only be getting about $1200 for it, she was hoping for about double that but it isn't working out that way. What sucks is that she was offered $1500 for it but didn't sell it because she was thinking she'd get more from scraping it, then she didn't plus had to do all the work involved to junk it.
