I found out today that I will be loosing my job by Jan. Mentally I've been preparing for this for over a year because I've witnessed lay-offs and consolidations at my company. I knew it was just a matter of time.

And since last Jan, I've been sending out resumes and I never get even an interview. It never used to be like this. I've never had a problem getting a job.

So, unemployment, here I come. I read an article on the front page of the WSJ yesterday where a man lost his job and went hiking. I thought that was cool. Maybe some time off will do me good.

Sorry about the impending job loss. I lost my job in January and I have used the time to totally change my life. I moved out of nyc and went back to graduate school to get a second graduate degree in a different field.

This could be a time of opportunity for you.....

Try to stock some emergency $ aside now (if you can). Yes, there are extensions to the unemployment, etc. but it can take weeks for them to process new claims and extend existing claims. I've been out of work for over a year and my initial claim in NJ took over 10 weeks to be processed. Thank God my husband is still working or I don't know I would have even purchased food. My last hiccup was over this past month. Best advice I can give you is to keep trying to get a job regardless of how long it takes. Remember, it's not necessarily you, it's the economy (the rejection can just feel overwhelming some days). I've been looking part time, full time, bussing tables, you name it, it's just not there. Don't give up and don't let anyone "shame" you about being on unemployment. The way I look at it is I paid into it for over sixteen years and now I need it - end of story. Good luck!

Take a hike, take a few weeks off from the rat race, do something to make you feel better and clear your head.

Some time off will be good but I'm sure soon enough I'll be worrying about bills and money. BTS - I am not opposed to more education for a new career. But, I am opposed to taking out more student loans. kwim? But I'll be fine. I'll figure something out.

You will be surprised at what is available to you for school danaf. I am on full fellowship and all my tuition and most of my living expenses are paid by the school. I just have to help some professors with their research, which is actually interesting. My fellowship is NOT need based, it was based on my grades from my other degrees, my GRE scores and recommendations.

I can totally relate to your situation and I know you will be fine and will figure something out.

I am getting a Masters in Public Policy. I was a quant and principal analyst on wall street and am transferring those skills to the public sector. The research is very interesting. I am in a highly ranked program, and I have a free ride in exchange for some research, which is preparing me for my career transition anyway.

I lost my job in 2006 and was very stressed being without a job but at least I did not have to worry about money due to having a large emergency fund.

Planning for emergencies really helps reduce stress.

I lost my job in 2006 and was very stressed being without a job but at least I did not have to worry about money due to having a large emergency fund.

I agree with you Ms. Sigferl: We are most fortunate with an income somewhat. Mrs. has had 3 maybe 4 unasked for UC extensions. She has fervently been looking and is over qualified or no work. There is an opening in what she had to resign from (due to personnel and personal reasons now gone) but the County HR person dislikes reemploying ex employees. We shall hope.

UC should not be a vacation, but, everyone needs a rest especially after the stress of loss of job.

For further info, there are PEL grants that can retrain many. Other grants are available.

The way I see our Govmint going, I am not pleased with our future as I see it. I save and stockpile material needs with every extra penny we have. 'Hub

I advise everyone to work two jobs if possible.

I lost my job in may of 2008-- have not gotten any "hits' after months and months looking for jobs. Losing my job made me have to lose my house. Right now I am temporarily living in a friend's basement-- yes, a homeless person. I just got a possible temp job-- will hear whether I got it in a few weeks. 12 hour shifts standing doing some mundane chore. Not bad for 6 years of college. I decided to go back to school and train for an "in-demand" job. I know I will need to start at the bottom again. Hope everything works out for you, but under the circumstances, you are free to do anything you want, so change. don't cling to the old life. I'd go to china, like many americans, if i did not have my dogs and cats to think about.
