    Lots of Folks Moving

I was down at the truck rental agency the other day picking up some supplies for our daughter's family who will be moving soon and filing a BK.
I was simply amazed just how busy they were renting trucks, trailers and such.
The guy said that since so many people are out of work they have been relocating trying to find work for over a year now. He said the company's business is up substantially over the last 18 months.
He said that he has seen several people come here to central AZ trying to get work, stay for awhile and move on without finding work here either.
I thought I heard correctly last night on the news that unemployment is now estimated to be at 9.8% nationwide.

I am in Michigan, and our unemployment rate is 15.2%. The effects of this are obvious, empty houses on every block not just the cities. Property in every neighborhood is abandoned, crime is rising and the general temperament of people is much shorter than it used to be.

We needed to rent a trailer recently, and after calling 15 places we could not find one, as they were all rented. It seems they need to be "reserved". Something that never would have been before.

We live in NE Florida, and note that even in the country and farm areas, there are many empty houses with signs on them. We drive to the County seat a small city and on every block there is at least one for sale sign. I don't think we have seen anything yet. I also do not see of any "trickle down" from G Bush and 'Bammy's stimulus. 'Hub

I don't think we've seen the bottom of the barrell yet either..... I believe there is much more to come unfortunatly....
Sad situation, companies closing, people loosing jobs, homes sold, people homeless (shelters are full).
In my own the city goes to the shelters and hires workers each morning that they can to do odd jobs that need to be done. Some are hired on a temporary basis till the works done, and some even end up with fulltime work in the end. I know of at least four guys who went fulltime just recently after 6 months of temp work (some with families)
If they are fortunate enough to go full time, the city helps them find housing, helps with utilities, etc until they get back on their feet.
My city has set up some execellent programs to help those in need. Unfortunately word is traveling fast and we are now getting folks from "out of town" and "out of state" trying to get-in on a peice of the pie (which takes away from locals who are homeless).
I look for them to stop the programs soon because of the "overflow" of people from other places.
It's hard to "survive in hard times", and some don't fight it, they just end it!
        Sad but true.......
We can hope for better things in the future, but right now its getting really "rough" for the poor and middleclass.

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

I agree and have thought we were headed in this direction for about 5 years.
Too many loans given in real estate on speculation and such and too many no equity loans give to people too.
And Junk Bonds? Why did people think they called them junk.
Just more Corporate Greed as I call it that we are all going to have to pay for in the future.

There are lots of people moving, and more and more vacant housing and apartments in our area. Bottom line? People are moving in with parents, children, family, room-mates or whoever they can to save and cut expenses.

            This party's just getting started.

OK, I have a dilemma and this thread looks like it has the brilliance to help me in my problem.

The background is: I built a building for my god-daughter, 12 X 32 similar but made much better to a little mobile home. I also have what is tantamount to a 12X25 shed I use for a work office. It has a toilet and shower (cold) and a bed and TV and of course one of the computers.

My god-daughter took off to go on her own. Her building was vacant for a year. I saw a guy on Craigs list, who would work hard for a place to stay until he got on his feet. I chanced it. He did not disappoint me and worked hard around our place on things I cannot do (hernia) and stuff I didn't want to do. He also went to day work for his gas and expenses and purchased us food from his food stamps that we made and shared so he was no problem. He had to leave and did suddenly on a family emergency in the middle of the night. He wrote a letter and called later. I told him when he settled his family problem (Mother was dying) he would be welcomed back. Six months later god-daughter and significant other appeared. She left on good terms and have been most helpful to Mrs. and I. Pays us rent, purchased me new tires when she saw my skins, and generally helped us. We are pleased with her and her spouse.

Surprise: The other guy shows up. Van full of everything he owns. I have no place yet I told him he would be welcomed back. Things change. I put him up in the little office building (shed). Mrs. and god-daughter are not pleased at all, and he is assuming he can stay.

I am too much of a wuss to explain to him that really we are getting too crowded here, and I know he would work hard, and contribute, but I really do use my office building as I am redoing my house and it is not livable.

So, in a kind way with diplomacy, how can I tell this guy he has to hit the road. It is like putting him under a bridge and handing him a cardboard sign. He has gone for a couple days to see his daughter, and all this came about yesterday. He is due back Sunday or so. His clothes are piled in our house.

To me, it would not bother me if he stayed and worked like he did, but I need the office, I need to live with Mrs., and god-daughter is strongly against another member of what is coming to be a commune.

Any suggestions??? I don't often ask for help, but I know I have to bite the bullet, but how? 'Hub

First off, ask the guy to go find a job doing something... and I hope he can in this economy. Explain to him that you can not keep all these people, and give him a time frame to find family to move in with, or get a job and then you can offer references for his rental apartment once he saved up enough for his deposit. I don't think I could kick anyone out myself, but I could have an honest conversation with them and get them to work out the plan with me for them to move. You are blesssed to have so much help I will have to say that!

That's right. The only thing that is certain is change.

I assume that you consider your God-daughter to be family? If that is the case, then there is no problem or conflict. Family comes first. You only help others after you and yours are taken care of.

As to the Craig's list tenant, wish him well, give him a good reference, and send him on his way. There's not a really easy way, just an honest one.

                    You can do it 'Hub.

I agree with every word. Along with stock piling storeable food (at today's costs not tomorrows inflation), I also stock pile a bit of ammunition. A very good thing to have is a pump action 22 long rifle. Purchase 22 ammo longs hollow point. It is good for squirrel hunting, and can take a bad guy down. Hold trigger and just keep pumping. No I'm not being anything but serious. Purchase your parents a hand gun, teach them how to use it. I had a guy attempt to enter my car at a red light once, the doors were locked and I ran the light. I was also stopped by two thugs when I was on a motor cycle. Mrs. had five goons attempt to stop her rental car in Galveston, but she held up her sail knife (required to carry on a tall ship) and those goons scattered. If it is them or you or yours, what would you do? Things are going to get worse and in Washington D.C. the amount of break ins and muggings are up drastically. When you save, there are those who fetch. Be ready. I am. 'Hub

I have guns, and we reload... Dad has more toys then we do.. lol He is armed to the gills many of his guns have been around since the 50's. I am not really sure what is going to happen, I have been thru a couple recessions with the worst one being in the late seventies. That one was caused by the gas shortage way back then! People lined up at pumps. I will never forget Carson causing a panic with toilet paper.. ha ha I will say I am very worried though ... because the last time it was like this this country still had mfg jobs. They were just moving to the south. Now they are moving out of this country.

Bad news for those who have to relocate because they can't find work; good news for the truck rental business. Thing is, even during times of recession, there's always some money to be made. We just need a little bit more creativity.
