Speaking of tires... choice to make

Anyone have a preference between these two brands?

    Capitol Radial
    Kuhmo Metric

These are the two I can afford right now.

I would go with the Kumho, its a very good brand. Metric tires have a very cheap tread block pattern which wears quickly and offers less than optimal traction, but its still a better tire than the other option. If 'siping' is offered at the tire store you goto, get that done if you can afford it, it usually runs around 10$ a tire or less than 50$ a set. Another thing to keep in mind is that most chain tire stores are negotiable on their prices. Not wal-mart or sears, but stores that are strictly tire stores like discount tire, belle tire, etc, you can negotiate better prices with them. On high end tires you can get them up to 40% lower than sticker price, on cheaper tires they can still knock off 10-20%. For example, if the tires you are buying are 40$ a piece, offer them 150$ 'out the door'- tax included, installed, and siping thrown in no charge. Maybe tell them you are just really broke right now, you'd appreciate it, and you'll come back next time. You'd be surprised.

I don't know much about tire brands, but I thought I'd mention the possibility of buying tires at Costco if you have a membership there or know someone who does. They warranty tires even if you should happen to run over a few nails and require a new one! That happened to me last week and for a brand new tire, normally about $170, I only had to pay a pro-rated fee of $30.

Good luck on your tire search!

Yes, everything is negotiable I've found. I can't help with the brand of tires, but I do know that when dealing with car repairs that they will come down on the price. Some places automatically assume that women know nothing about cars--WRONG!!! I make it my business to know. I've traveled with men for business trips, had a vehicle break down, and usually knew what was wrong with it and the guys didn't.
