BKFORUM.com (BKF) users agree to use the search function before starting a new thread. This prevents duplicate discussions and allows for better organized topics.

All BKF users agree to read the sticky posts which may be available at the top of a forum page. These Sticky posts often contain valuable information. They may also outline more rules and guidelines specific for that particular forum, stickies are put in place by that forums moderator(s) or admin(s).

Things you agree not to do:

All BKF users agree not to call people names or write a post simply to make a personal attack, or get a negative reaction; this behavior is not allowed on our forum. The use of derogatory language aimed at anyone will be severely dealt with. There is no need to agree with each other, or to even like each other. However, by signing onto BKForum.com you agree to treat each member and guest with the respect they deserve. No threats or personal attacks will be allowed.

All BKF users agree not to "bump" old threads, unless there is a specific benefit to the community by doing so. But in most cases, please don't post in very old threads, instead start new threads.

All BKF users agree not to attempt/use another members account. It is against BKF rules to use any account other than your own. Impersonating another member will result in an immediate ban. It is also against the rules to open more than one account in your own name without permission from a moderator or administrator. If you wish to discuss bans or warnings please do so via PM. To place a complaint against a moderator, send a PM to a super moderator. All Moderators are equal, any decision made by a moderator must be adhered to. If a moderator tells you something you do not like, do not go to another moderator looking for a different answer. If you are caught doing this you will be banned. The moderators work as a team and respect the decisions made by their peers and will help enforce them unless an administrator tells them differently.
If you have an issue with how the forum is run, then notify one of our administrator and we will look into the situation. By posting on this forum you agree to these terms and conditions, including any punishment deemed appropriate by moderators or administrators in the event of an offense.

Administrators/Moderators can change these rules at any time without prior notice.

  • New Here! filed chapter 7 but have upcoming dental work next week!

    Hi all,
I have been lurking a bit, I decided to file chapter 7 early Feb. My court hearing is 3/12!

My lawyer is awesome and made me feel at ease, like this is a breeze and I should not have waited so long! What pushed me into it, I did receive a judgement for wage garnishment, which I just cannot afford. I live with my boyfriend, he was going to loan me the money to pay the judgement, but I said well I have all the other old CC bills sitting unpaid, so it was a few hundred more for the lawyer. paying the judgement would have only been a bandaid.

So i only had credit card debt, but had an emergency dental appointment the other day - it turns out they have to do an extraction with bone grafting and want to do an implant on one tooth, its towards the back so you cant see it when I smile - anyway, the price tag on that is 4800! Insurance only covers 1000.00 ugh!

Should I wait until after the procedure (its monday at noon) to tell them I cannot pay them because of BK? I am waiting for my lawyer to call back I just wondered if anyone else had a similar situation?
There is no way I can swing 4800 in one year! Talk about bad timing! I was also in the waiting room with other people so I did not want to discuss my situation as its not any ones business plus I was in sticker shock.

    thanks!

I believe Maris80386 meant to get a second opinion assuming that a second professional may present a different cost estimate or strategy, and not so much the diagnoses. Maybe change that to get.a second quote.

Your BK should really play no role in this, except that getting credit to pay for the work may be more difficult. Make whatever arrangements you can to pay for the care you need.
          LadyInTheRed is in the black!
Filed Chap 13 April 2010. Discharged May 2015.
$143,000 in debt discharged for $36,500, including attorneys fees. Money well spent!

Brokenj, wow, I thought I was the only one having bad dental problems but yours are worse than mine and for that I am sorry. I doubt you can stay on antibiotics forever ,although some might say wait 5 years for care in our case because we are in in a chapter 13 for a full 4 more years. I am in a similar situation but one year into a Chapter 13 and I will also need an implant after my tooth is pulled next week. (We can not afford $2500 for another root canal followed by another crown. (We maxed out my yearly insurance coverage of $1500 on a single crown followed by a root canal on another tooth last week. so we would bear the full brunt of the costs.)
Our plan is to pull the tooth this year and do the implant next year when the insurance may pay 60%. Can you wait until next year to finish the job? Remember the socket needs time to heal before any grafting can be done if you need it. After your BK is concluded, you may have more money . Definitely get a second opinion before doing anything besides pulling the tooth. Do you know if the infection has spread to the jawbone yet? That is an immediate emergency! I was told mine is not hurting because I had already had a root canal on the tooth at least 8 and a half years ago. Did you already have a root canal on the painful tooth? I am not aware of any credit available to BK debtors -that is something that has never been addressed on these forums is why debtors are expected to pay cash for awful emergencies like these and not have some kind of access to Medicaid or the like when you simply can not save up almost $5000. But since your case will soon be over you may have better options and maybe qualify for CareCredit again . You are lucky to be in a 7 and not a 13 (like me).
It sucks to be in pain and you deserve care now. Keep us posted on how you resolve this.
            Good luck!

thanks so much! I had the teeth pulled and the bone grafting done, I am going to wait until next year, like after September 2019 to continue the work. because he said the implant will take a year anyway! and its so far in back of my mouth you cant even tell which is a good thing. I did have to pay the 390.00 difference that my insurance doesn't cover that day. LIke I have that ugh!

The two yes two that were pulled were not root canals, just super old fillings that they couldn't save.

I can't believe your root canals are 2500! yikes, I normally end up paying 300.00 OP for mine.

I had my 341 on Monday, so I have to wait about 6 weeks for the discharge, my lawyer said (I am in NJ) so I want to apply for Care Credit because frankly I am a dental mess lol, my fear of the dentist keeps me from my regular 6 months check ups, and I am thinking my teeth don't hurt sooo... . But I do have an appt for a cleaning and check up next month. My last cleaning was 2 year ago.

I am feeling much better and he said my gums are healing better than normal.

Hey, brokenj, !'m glad you're no longer in pain - thank goodness for that! You deserve a break!
To answer your comment, actually the root canal after insurance is exhausted costs about $1000 and the crown would cost $1250-$1500 (because of a new buildup). It's more like a thousand when Delta insurance is in effect. I also found out I have $1250 in "rollover dollars"( what ever that is?) left to use once my insurance is totally exhausted. (I think I may have about $100 left that I will be able able to put towards the pulling of the back tooth.)
I know it's hard but you really must keep up those regular cleanings in order to avoid more costly implants! Few people on these forums understand how important and expensive good dental hygiene and care is and think skipping regular cleanings , fillings, etc is fine and figure delayed care can be done for BK13 filers in four or more years! If the tooth suddenly starts to hurt, just pull it! But the ramifications can be severe and dentures aren't cheap either!
Hopefully your BK7 will soon be over and you can start your life anew and rebuild quickly!
                Best of luck on everything!

Thank you! Me too! I know I do good for a while, then my fear and anxiety comes back and i skip going but I need to suck it up and go. at least I get all the gas lol
Well at least you had rolllover dollars thats a good thing! I have Aetna insurance.
I would love to have all my teeth pulled and have all implants but they cost as much as a new car haha so that is out.

I am just happy the hearing is behind me, I cannot wait to start to rebuild my credit so I can get the Care Credit and hopefully a new car. Otherwise I am skipping any credit cards
