Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!) (updated: 04/28/2015)

Welcome to the Bankruptcy Forum. Bankruptcy (BK) Forum is known as BKForum.com and will be referred to as BKF hereinafter. In order to ensure a long term success of our vibrant community, we have established certain rules and guidelines to which everyone must adhere to. Please take your time to carefully read our rules, before you start to participate in the community.

Things you agree to do:
BKFORUM.com (BKF) users agree to use the search function before starting a new thread. This prevents duplicate discussions and allows for better organized topics.

All BKF users agree to read the sticky posts which may be available at the top of a forum page. These Sticky posts often contain valuable information. They may also outline more rules and guidelines specific for that particular forum, stickies are put in place by that forums moderator(s) or admin(s).

Things you agree not to do:

All BKF users agree not to call people names or write a post simply to make a personal attack, or get a negative reaction; this behavior is not allowed on our forum. The use of derogatory language aimed at anyone will be severely dealt with. There is no need to agree with each other, or to even like each other. However, by signing onto BKForum.com you agree to treat each member and guest with the respect they deserve. No threats or personal attacks will be allowed.

All BKF users agree not to discuss, engage, or encourage any behavior or activity which violates the law. Discussion of drugs, violence, murder, theft, vandalism, fraud or any other issue which could be used to help individuals break the law is strictly forbidden.

All BKF users agree not to "bump" old threads, unless there is a specific benefit to the community by doing so. But in most cases, please don't post in very old threads, instead start new threads.

All BKF users agree not to attempt/use another members account. It is against BKF rules to use any account other than your own. Impersonating another member will result in an immediate ban. It is also against the rules to open more than one account in your own name without permission from a moderator or administrator. If you have been banned for any reason, it is against the rules to open another account. If you were banned temporarily and you are caught using another account you will be banned permanently. Choosing a moniker which is similar in either sound or spelling as a moderator or administrator is strictly forbidden.

All BKF users agree not to abuse or mistreat moderators or administrators. It is against BKF rules to post any information regarding bans or any other action taken by a member of the moderating or administrative team. If you wish to discuss bans or warnings please do so via PM. To place a complaint against a moderator, send a PM to a super moderator. All Moderators are equal, any decision made by a moderator must be adhered to. If a moderator tells you something you do not like, do not go to another moderator looking for a different answer. If you are caught doing this you will be banned. The moderators work as a team and respect the decisions made by their peers and will help enforce them unless an administrator tells them differently.
If you have an issue with how the forum is run, then notify one of our administrator and we will look into the situation. We have in the past and still do appreciate any input that you offer this forum. But critical input and/or judgmental postings towards the staff will result in you getting banned.

  • Disabled & Unemployed & BK7

Has anyone else had a bankruptcy discharged and is unemployed and disabled? I'd like to try to go back to work soon but I'm worried about having been on disability and the bankruptcy.

When you're restored to the point that you can look for work again, mike, I think people will absolutely understand and support you - even judgmental types who dislike bankrupt types - because your problem was not within the realm of your own control. When the time comes, I think you're going to come across just fine in interviews. What's not to like?

1.) Never tell everything you know.

            Hi Mike,

I'm in the same boat and am absolutely not concerned about finding a job when the time (hopefully) comes along. I think it's because I spent a lot of time interviewing people when I was working and know that every situation can be explained in a positive light. Interviewers don't really care what the problem was. They want to hear how you made the best of the situation.

In a situation like ours, something like this could work:

"My previous role/position was very stressful. I loved what I did but had to come to a very hard realization that after years of doing it, there were factors that really took a toll on me. I wasn't maintaining the balance needed to enjoy the challenges of the job while also taking care of myself. It was a hard decision to step away from that role. But once I did, I was able to find balance and learned to stop to smell the roses. Now I know what that balance needs to look like and have the skills and awareness to make sure I stay in it. I'm glad I took the time off - focusing on my own well-being was a skill I needed to learn. Now I'm recharged, ready to go, and looking forward to being part of the XYZ project (or whatever the case may be)."

As far as the BK goes, it's also easy to explain. If you have to put it out there, just explain it in a way that shows you made a difficult decision to achieve the best business outcome. The circumstances were outside your control but you took actions to bring the situation back into control. Be honest and firm in your conviction that you did the right thing. The interviewer will pick up on your confidence and it will work in your favor.
OK - from now on it's not a "Bankruptcy." It's a "Weight Loss Program." I'm in. Sign me up.

              Hi Peeps,

I really appreciate your positive spin on my situation, especially since we're in the same boat.
You have given me an encouraging way of looking at my future.

              Mike

You'll be ok - I have confidence in you!! Just look at what you've accomplished - dealing with the SSA and then with a BK is no small feat. I'm not even halfway as far as you are.

Just keep in mind most interviewers are really inexperienced and don't quite know what to ask. They're probably more scared of you than you are of them!

But seriously, in the meantime just focus on you. Being on disability is hardly a way to live richly but it does at least give a person time to heal and learn to manage whatever health issues they're dealing with. Take care of you. And feel free to PM anytime.

I'm in the same boat...worked full-time my whole life, got sick, put on disability, lost job, now filing bk, and still don't have a clear enough diagnosis to know whether I'll be able to work again or not. However, I've found that most people are very understanding of our having to file bk as a result of no job/disability. When/if I am able to work again, I'm not worried about explaining my bk or disability. Sometimes life gives you lemons, and you just have to make lemonade. I think that's what we're all doing, and a large portion of America "gets it" these days...

It will all work out in time...

Just a FYI for anyone else on SSDI who are thinking about going back to work, you must not work for 12 months from your disability award letter or you will have to pay back all of the SSDI payments you have received.
