Sales tax credit on new car?

I was discharged in October 2025, and they just came today to pick up my old car that I surrendered.

I can't find any laws specifying if this counts or not. I live in Missouri. Google was suggesting it's possible, but there is nothing backing it up.

Sales tax credits generally apply to the sale or trade of your old vehicle, so I'm wondering if the lender could send a copy of the bill of sale so I could apply for a refund for the sales tax credit.

Has anyone ever tried doing this?

For Florida, at least, we have to do it in a single transaction.

For Missouri, you file Missouri DOR Form-426 if you did this transaction within 180 days.

This is not tax advice and you need to make sure you have all the correct documentation. It's too bad that my State doesn't allowed this 2-step process. We require it to be in a single transaction during the purchase of the new vehicle. I was able use this sales tax exemption on my last purchase since I traded in the vehicle as part of the purchase. I was going to sell to CarMax but that would have negated the sales tax issue.

I have not tried doing this because my State does not allow the two-step sale and purchase to claim the exemption. I would also think that this forum is probably not the best place to ask a question on sales tax exemptions. You may want to ask around bout DOR Form-426. Documentation is key. The dates on that documentation (or the sale and the purchase) will drive 99% of the ability to claim the exemption.
