Landlord reporting on-time rental payments to credit bureau...

Will this help with upping our credit rating post-bk? How do they go about doing that (do they just send in a letter to each credit bureau)?

Lastly the landlord is my dad (different last name now since I'm married) does this matter? We do pay him rent every month and we are on time so it's not like we're living here for free or only paying him when we can, so it is legitimate.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Generally, land lords do not report to credit reporting agencies, strictly speaking land lords are not extending you credit.

I believe you have to pay the CRA's to have the right to report. It will be too much of a hassle for your dad to register to report, and possibly too costly. There is no harm looking into it, I suppose, but don't get your hopes up. There is reason only well-heeled creditors participate in credit reporting.

      And neither do utility companies.

        Good point(s), drat!

Thanks though. I really don't want to get credit cards again. We'll eventually want another car since we've only got the one right now and was hoping to pay cash for it eventually (used) but maybe we should save the money anyway and finance it when the time comes to help build up our credit.

        thanks again!

That is changing. Verizon is now reporting late payments. There was a circular in our billing several months back indicating that. It's best not to be late with any payment for anything anymore.

Correct, cell phone companies, and some utility companies will report late payments, or when your account is in "collections", but they don't report your account as a tradeline with balance and payment history. Same probably goes with larger management companies...but the only time I have ever seen home leases reported on a CRA report is when the account has been turned over to a 3rd party collector.

WILL IT HELP IF YOUR LANDLORD WRITES A LETTER ON YOUR BEHALF, THAT YOU MADE TIMELY PAYMENTS ETC. WHEN YOU APPLY FOR A MORTGAGE. I PLAN ON ASKING MY LANDLORD FOR ONE, WHEN THE TIME COMES.

                1. Do not write in ALL CAPS...that is just bad Internet forum form.

                2. But you are correct, when someone is credit challenged; typically, they will ask their landlord to write a reference letter on their behalf to the mortgage bank/broker. However, in OP's case, since the landlord is a relative, you would probably need to supply proof of payment history.

                  1. Sorry, sometimes I have my caps lock on.

                  2. My landlord is not my relative.

All these creative fonts are hard to read, also.
