Getting a new credit card while in Ch 13

From what one of the attorneys told me, I could not apply for new credit, except for business purposes, which would apply to me, since I am self-employed.

I would be hesitant to have a working credit card again, since abuse of credit got me into a lot of hot water.

But I can see how a card could help with auto rentals (not all will take debit card) and situations in which the credit would be used to complete work on a job, for which I would be paid upon completion.

    1) I think I wold have to get trustee permission. Is that hard to get? Do I go directly to the trustee for questions like that or through my attorney?

    2) Is it hard to get a credit card after filing chapter 13?

Go through your attorney. The trustee will want to know why you need a credit card, so have a written explanation to give to your lawyer why it's a necessity (not just a want) for you to get it now.

You won't find a cc creditor to approve a non-secured credit card while you're in an active Ch 13. You may be able to find a creditor who will allow you to have a secured card (one that is paid through your personal account - it's different than a debit card).

After Ch 13 is discharged and closed, because you have a long record of paying your trustee payments on time, it's possible to get a non-secured credit card then, but it's likely to have high APR and an annual fee to boot. It's easier to get new credit than right after a Ch 7 is closed, but it's still an uphill climb.
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.
