The company I'm currently working for doesn't offer health insurance and I tried getting an individual policy but my pre-existing condition is something individual plans won't cover. Apparently it's still legal for independent insurance companies to deny based on pre-existing conditions. I think this all changes in Jan 2014.

I'll see what I can do. For now, I've been writing letters to them letting them know I'm in BK and cannot afford to pay at this time. I think that my bank account would be safe until I was taken to court and a judge issued a judgement against me. I think that would be months away, and most hospitals won't bother with the legal expense on such a small debt. Each bill is around 3-5k and they are from different hospitals so it's not like I owe 100k to one hospital. I'm hoping they just write it off.Originally posted by keepsmiling View PostOP, can you send these idiots 5 bucks a month to try to keep them at bay for a little while? I wonder. Otherwise you may have to start asking about having your check sent elsewhere, maybe directly to a debit card. Sucks I know. Do double check your laws. At least TX is more debtor-friendly than NJ.
Can't they still seize the debit card account if I get my check direct deposited to it? I thought it acted just like a bank account where they could search/freeze the account?

You are correct that they need to sue you and get a judgement before they can collect from bank accounts or wages. Once they get the judgement, they can get at a debit card account too.Originally posted by cz3ch View PostI'll see what I can do. Well hopefully it doesn't get to that point. If it does, I'll be requesting paper checks and cashing them at WalmartOriginally posted by LadyInTheRed View PostYou are correct that they need to sue you and get a judgement before they can collect from bank accounts or wages.
