    Pre BK Purchase Questions

My wife and I plan to file for BK soon.

We are moving into an apartment and, as of today, do not have a washer, dryer, or tv of any kind.

Could there be any issues with puschasing these items prior to filing?

To me, given that cable, entertainment, and laundry have entries as allowable expenses, it would seem that this would be ok, but maybe that's a naive point of view?

They will count as assets. You'll need to check and see what your state allows for personal property exemptions...

I wouldn't stress about this. A washer and dryer would be included in household goods. Household goods are not valued at what you actually pay for them but at what they are worth if you tried to sell them in a newspaper want ad, a garage sale, or on eBay. The average US household has goods worth $2000 and $3000 dollars total, and that includes the washer and dryer

However, do be sure to pay cash or use a personal check to purchase the washer and dryer - no credit cards or cash advances! If you can find a good used pair, that's even better. Be sure to keep the purchase receipt as well just in case.

If you have retained a bk lawyer, be sure to ask first if he/she thinks making this purchase is ok before you file. Good luck - hope you enjoy your new apartment!

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.
