Does it make sense to re-affirm one credit card with a low balance just so you have one available after bankruptcy ?

Even tho you'll be allowed to continue paying payments, the Creditor may freeze and close your acct anyway. You would not be able to charge any new purchases if they do that. So in that sense, the CC would not survive the BK anyway.
As noted above, you will get offers. You may have to start out low LOC, crappy companies to start, but you can build your way back up to better Creditors and bigger LOC's.Filed Ch 7 - 09/06

Agree 100%. The object of the exercise is the total complete and utter destruction of all unsecured creditors.
I'd also suggest that filing bk is easy. It's what comes next that's hard. Changing the behavior that led to the bk. Try life without credit cards for awhile. Learn to budget and save and live below your means.
I'd not worry about access to credit post bk until you've all the other stuff fixed. I'm 16 months post bk filing and doing just fine with a checkbook and cash.

If I were you, I wouldn't reaffirm any credit card debts, but I guess what's done is done if you already signed papers agreeing to it. It's like the others said, that's the whole point of bankruptcy, to wipe out your existing debts and get a fresh start and learn to budget your money. I've gone over a year without charging on the cards. Right now my husband and I are doing the debtor education and hope to have that done within the next few days. Then we'll get the certificate in the mail so our lawyer can file it with the courts. Last date for objection from our creditors is March 4. I can't wait until this is all over. Before the bk I dreaded getting up in the morning because our debt load was practically all I could think about. We included all six cards in the BK that we owe on. The only debt we reaffirmed was my husband's car loan.341 meeting: January 3, 2007

I totally agree with you. Having access to credit when this is all over isn't at the top of my priority list. Unlike before, we're actually living below our means now and it feels great. Things are simple. We don't have much, but I no longer have the ton of worries that I did before we decided to file. Now that our 341 is behind us, that's another load off our shoulders. Like you, I think we'll just stick with a checkbook and cash like we've been doing for the past year. I don't want to have anything to do with credit cards anymore. We've been getting credit card offers in the mail all along (just got one today); they go straight in the trash unopened. I don't care how good they try to make their deal sound, so I don't even waste my time reading about it.Originally posted by keepmine View PostAgree 100%. Good for you, yomama! It is possible to live within our means - feels good, doesn't it?
One caution - there have been cases of individuals taking those unopened credit applications sent to you with information pre-filled in from your trash and using them for identity theft. To ensure this doesn't happen to you, tear the unopened envelope up before you slam-dunk it into the trash.Originally posted by yomama View PostWe've been getting credit card offers in the mail all along (just got one today); they go straight in the trash unopened. Yes, it feels absolutely great. I wish we had done this sooner, but at least we're taking the right steps finally. We lived without credit cards before and were just fine and we are doing fine again. We can do without going on vacations, etc.Originally posted by lrprn View PostGood for you, yomama! It is possible to live within our means - feels good, doesn't it?
Oh, no need to worry about anyone getting our personal information. We live in a rural area and by "trash" I meant the things that we burn out in our burn barrel. The things that we give to the garbage man and that people would have access to (we don't put unopened mail in that) is what we call "garbage".Originally posted by lrprn View PostOne caution - there have been cases of individuals taking those unopened credit applications sent to you with information pre-filled in from your trash and using them for identity theft.
