Anyone choose an attorney from NACBA?

NACBA = National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys

One atty I spoke with in another state (via net) who was very helpful, recommended I choose someone from their membership. Since he had gone out of his way to answer my question for free, I am considering choosing someone from this group: www.nacba.com. (The guy I liked was Brett Weiss, in Maryland - www.brettweiss.com/bankruptcy. Can't say he's good or not but at least he helped me out by answering a question for free.)

But, any bk attorney can join NACBA, so it doesn't mean they're good, really. But NACBA are advocates for debtors and bankruptcy attorneys and have access to latest info about bankruptcy and listserv to other members, so that could be a good thing.

Hubby's and my most excellent bk attorney is a NACBA member. Take a look at the NABCA national convention agenda and check out the speakers that are presenting - they are some the best bankruptcy lawyers in America and have the respect of their peers - http://www.nacba.org/files/main_page/LV_Friday.pdf

Don't have time right now to see if there are any speakers from the Los Angeles area, but it's a place to start

Brett Weiss used to post regularly on another bankruptcy forum until it was overrun by spammers and trolls. He's knowledgeable, thoughtful, and a passionate debtor advocate. Notice Brett is also listed on Cathy Moran's Find a Bankrutpcy Specialist website that I included in a reply for you on another post - http://moranlaw.net/specialists.htm

Yes, I think I found Brett Weiss from that other forum, now that I think about it, then I went to his site from there.

Thanks for the urls. Somehow I missed or forgot to check that moranlaw.net page. But I see there is only one L.A. atty on that list and I had not liked something about his site. Looking at it again, I'm not sure why...

As for the speakers at the NACBA thing you linked me to, thanks, but all the Calif. speakers are from N. California, too far from L.A..

Anyway, I think I found another attorney from NACBA. This guy is Marvin Mann in Redondo Beach and this is why I am pretty sure I am going to go with him:

      1) HE answered his phone. This was after calling 2 others on the phone who had only message machines, and after talking to one other office the other day who I could only talk with her paralegal, oh, and then a guy who wanted $40 for the 1st consultation that everyone else gives for free.
      2) He does only 50+ bk's per year, which okay, maybe he's not the MOST adept in the business, but that's still quite a few and it's just him, not him and a team. He may or may not have a paralegal helping, I did not ask, but I would guess he is a "do it yourself" guy for the most part.
      3) He was very nice on the phone, wasn't trying to hurry me, and was very pleasant, waited patiently for me to ask all my questions and gave thoughtful answers.
      4) His price is under $1000! That's amazing after I just got a quote from the last woman of $4000! AND the first guy I talked with had told me $1600. Redondo Beach is half an hour outside of Los Angeles in a more "mellow", less populated area, so maybe that's why. He said he gets less business now that the new laws are in effect, but he still does 50 a year. (He does divorces also, but that's not such a bad thing, is it? I mean, that he's not a "bankruptcy ONLY" guy?
      5) He said "Well, if you have any more questions, call me!" This is before I have given him a cent. In fact, he said I should wait another month or more til my last charge has past 3 months before filing, so I will do that.

The bottom line is that now that I've talked with 4 or 5 attorneys, this has been the ONLY one I've liked, and aside from his doing divorces too, I couldn't find anything I didn't like about him from the phone call. He was very nice, and since he's a NACBA member I can only hope that this means he cares enough to do good work and "know his stuff".

Also, with his lower price, that way if something gets complicated, I'll better be able to afford to pay him for the extra hours...

By the way, I finally got around to checking my new NOLO book about how to find an attorney, and NACBA is the only website they list for finding an attorney.

      Thanks for your reply!
