    What's a GOOD post-filing pre-discharge financial education course?

(I am talking about the course also sometimes known as a "debtor education" course. To be clear, I am talking about the SECOND course you take, the one you take AFTER filing but before you get discharged.)

I read the Sticky on this and although a few were listed, no one seemed to have any reviews on them. Since I am spending money on an educational class I would like to take one where I might actually learn something useful! (What a concept.)

So my question is not Which ones are out there, which ones are cheap, which ones are easy? - but rather:

Which one have you taken that you actually considered wortwhile, where you actually learned something about budgeting?

Or are they all just a waste of time so I may as well take the cheapest or easiest?

I did mine the other night at debtor-ed.com. Most of the information is pretty basic, but they did link a few good websites and I did learn a few things about refinancing and such.

$50.00 - Entirely online. They email your certificate when it's done.

We took the Hummingbird post-filing financial education (aka debt management) course online this last weekend. One and half hours of video watching for five code words with a 15 question multiple choice test at the end. Pretty good content too, especially if you are fairly new to managing family finances responsibly and budgeting. Lots of good info on how credit cards work and how credit reports work too. Cost was $19 for each of us - $38 total.

Since each of us only takes our courses once, it's hard to cross-compare between agencies. Bottom line is it's a box to check - as my grandma used to say, "I wouldn't get your panties in a twist over it."

The cheapest! These outfits could care less if you learn anything or you don't. These courses are a good example of money makers that provide absolutely nothing in return. If you're an avid reader here you probably know more than them.

We used cricket for the first course, which was $36 and we are using them again for the 2nd course. When you go to www.cricketdebt.com they redirect you to www.hananwill.com which is I guess a sister site. The price is $35 a household. It's the cheapest I've found so far.

If you want one that is both inexpensive and done by someone who actually cares about teaching you something, I'd recommend the Dave Ramsey course. He's fun to listen to and will definitely make you think. It is NOT a course to just get over with and get the certificate. I've totally changed how I manage my finances as a result. (I admit I was leaning in that direction anyway, so this really fit.)

He is all about using cash only (except for mortgages) and budgeting not to be miserly but to really minimize financial worrying (both in the present, in emergencies, and in retirement). He also went through a huge financial crash and bankruptcy earlier in life, so he definitely can relate to where we're coming from.

            www.daveramsey.com Cost is $25.

Be certain that whatever course you choose, it is on the approved list for your state:

Before filing credit counseling course - http://www.usdoj.gov/ust/eo/bapcpa/ccde/cc_approved.htm

After filing debt management (financial education) course - http://www.usdoj.gov/ust/eo/bapcpa/ccde/de_approved.htm
