    USAA Banking

I have 2 checking accounts and insurance with USAA. We BK'ed 2 CC's with them(filed last week).

When I log into both accounts I still see the checking accounts and our insurance account.

Do you think they will take away our checking access?

I already have our insurance bill mailed to us.

ETA: We don't have our direct deposit going there anymore, just curious about the account just in case we wanted to use it later.

    Greeting Cali, my friend:

When we bk'ed, my 42 year old CU account was closed, frozen, until I contacted them and reaffirmed my line of credit (OD protection) and my car. They dishonored my outstanding checks also, but then reversed the NSF charges. I would contact them for sure before writing anything against them. 'Hub
If I knew it all, would I be here?? Hang in there = Retained attorney 8-06, Filed 12-28-07, Discharge 8-13-08, Finally CLOSED 11-3-09, 3-31-10 AP Dismissed, Informed by incompetent lawyer of CLOSED status, October 14, 2010.

I've been lurking here since we filed in April. I saw this post and thought "Finally! Something I can answer."

The bad news is that USAA will cancel your vehicle and home insurance. They will also never give you access to online account stuff ever again. This is their policy if they take a loss. We are discharging a credit card and this is what we were told. They are only continuing our vehicle insurance until the end of this 6 month term, our homeowners until the next yearly payment is due. They did reaffirm my vehicle. I thought it was odd that they wouldn't want to continue the insurance when they are the lienholder. When we questioned them about this they said they have a strict policy when it comes to USAA taking a loss of any kind.

I am in CA and I don't think the state allows them to take my insurance away because of a BK. I could be wrong about this.

They know we filed last week, but haven't taken my online access yet. How long after you filed were you not able to log into your account?

I guess I can always call and ask.

We are in California as well (Riverside County). I was so bummed! We get great rates through them. We called to ask what was up when we lost our account access. That was when we were informed that they would not be continuing our insurance policies past their current expiration dates due to the loss they would be incurring. The representative that we would have to reaffirm all debts with them if we wanted to continue service.

USAA is the only creditor that continued to call us after the stay was in place. After 2 weeks they finally caught me at home. I informed them of the bk. They acted surprised but my attorney assured me they had been contacted. It was after this phone call that we lost our account access. It could be that the right department is still unaware of your filing status.

            That is so weird.

They never called us and we stopped paying in Feb.
I called yesterday to make sure they had the updated addy for auto and renter's insurance.
I called today because I notice my CC account was taken from my list of accounts but hubby's wasn't.
Still no one said anything to me.

How long were you a member for? Military?

Ok I just got off the phone with Customer Service and their BK Dept.
I was told that they would take online access away, but I could still use the accounts. I would just have to call Customer Service to do it that way. And my insurance will stay with them. They won't take it away. Once I am discharged my online access will be available again.

They only called us a handful of times before we filed. We stopped paying in January and filed a few months later. In fact, they called more in the 2 weeks after we filed than they did in the 3 months prior. It was weird and more than a little irritating.

We've been members for several years. My husband is active duty (almost 17 years in).

I would just call them and ask them. I'm sure they would've notified us at least 30 days prior to cancelling but it was nice to get the heads up a few months in advance so that we knew we were going to have to get another insurance carrier. It sucks but what can you do? No way was I going to reaffirm that debt just to keep my vehicle insurance with them.

We must've been posting at the same time.

I wish I knew who you talked to! I would certainly like to get a hold of that person. Maybe I should have my husband speak to somebody else. Hmmmm....

Maybe he or you should try calling the BK dept.

I also asked my attorney about this. He said what they told me was right. We shall see.

We have a local CU here that the DDS goes to.

I'm glad I posted! My husband will definitely be calling the BK department tomorrow for clarification. I spoke to him about it. He now wonders if the "hard line" policy regarding termination of all services is really a policy or if the rep was trying to get a reaffirmation out of him. The rep told him that our insurance policies would absolutely not be renewed at the end of this term and that USAA would not be doing business with us in the future because of the loss.

I did a Google search using the terms USAA & bankruptcy & a lot of different items came up, mostly from people complaining that they were cut off permanently due to bankruptcy. They should pick a policy and stick with it either way.

                      Thanks for your input!

Hey Cali: I don't know what USAA is, but if I'm not wrong, you are a wife of a vet overseas? I believe this true without ID anyone here, but this does not ring right with me if true. I am following all this the best I can in that my lawyer is just plain #$%^&&* and bad as well. So I am learning. If this is a Credit Union or other for Vets, shame on them. Please explain to me. 'Hub

USAA was like this when they cut off services to civilians. They didn't have 1 straight answer.

I have talked to 4 people there in the past 2 days and no one has said anything about cutting us off from our insurance or banking. Two of the calls were to the insurance dept., one to BK dept., and one to banking. They all knew I filed on the 5th.

I am really more curious than anything, since our DDS goes to our local CU. I would like to keep the insurance since we have a great deal.

We shall see how it turns out.

We have had USAA car and life insurance over 30 years (hubby is a Vietnam vet), and we bk'ed on their credit card for over $10K - they will get about 30% back through our Ch 13.

We still have both our car and life insurance, so obviously it's *NOT* a given that USAA will cancel insurance if they take a loss. Our rates haven't gone up either. We did lose our online access after we filed, but USAA also told us we would get it back once our plan is done.

I still have access, and it's been a week.
