Sally's products always scared me, but regular box dyes (with the highlighting kits) have always resulted in disaster, so the salon is "most economical." Imagine my last home attempt - brown hair turning burdandy with orange highlights! lol

Hair is an entirely different issue because there are a billion cheap box dye kits at the drug store, so just because you're getting your hair done, doesn't mean you're spending $50 a month. But, that aside, if you're working and need professional hair for that job, I'd say keep the highlighting up. If you're not working, just let it go until after your meeting.

I tend to agree with the nail thing--I remember meeting one of my kid's teachers one year and I couldn't tell you what she wore or about her hair but I REMEMBER those nails that were painted with little pictures and such!!! She had quite the snazzy manicure.

Hair is another matter; I see nothing wrong with nice, short nails in the workplace as a professional in lieu of a spiffy manicure, but untrimmed/poorly colored hair can be a huge standout for *not* the right reasons.

depending on your work environment some of these personal maintenance expenditures may be considered necessary. if you interface with the customer, employers want you looking your best. but i'd go with modest/understated highlights and shorter nails ;).

I also have my hair highlighted, but quit going to the salon a couple years ago because of the cost. I now buy my products online and for about $65.00to $70.00, can highlight my hair for about 14-15 months. I have the cap, brush and bowl just like my hairdresser did. It's super easy to mix products and do it yourself and the color comes out the way I want it - not like I Love Lucy! I also trim my hair myself, but have medium length hair so it's pretty easy to just snip the ends. If it starts getting really ratty looking, I'll get my hair trimmed professionally for about $20.00, but usually only once per year.

This discussion disturbs me. If you DO earn enough to get your hair cut, and for your wife to get highlights in her hair, you just don't earn enough to pay 300,000 in medical bills (and keep the rest of your world solvent) what's the issue?

If you haven't put anything on credit since filing, and your income is under the median...why is it an issue if you do something nice?

There is a section on the forms for "personal care", so they assume you spend something on it. I would imagine what you do for a living also dictates if it's a justifiable expense. I agree it's a good question for your attorney, to see what he or she has seen for amounts in the category slide by without raising any red flags.

All the advice I've seen say to be realistic in your budget, without being excessive. We all need to cut back, but we also need to live.

LOL! My friends still tease me about the time I ended up with lavender and orange hair...and that was so NOT the goal!

Sorry, the medical thing was hypothetical. This thread made me nervous because I didn't know there was a lot of post-filing scrutiny (of everyday stuff) in a 7.

I've always thought if you pass means for 7 prior to filing, that's pretty much the end of it. Guess I'll be more careful too.

Hey I felt like that for a long time & then bought myself a couple of nice dress short sleeve dress shirts for summer & it made me feel like a million bucks!
I know that is humor but there is some truth in it.

I know please don't shake your head, i am just wondering if he/she will say why are you spending your money on that? Also, i had my nails done for my friends wedding in June and I had tips put on, Now i usually go every 3 weeks for nails and pedicure, should I have the nails taken off and stop the pedicures? Is that frowned upon by the trsutee? I never get a pedicure in the winter just in the summer cause my feet get really dry. Please don't jump on me for asking this question. Just want to know if the trustee will look me over and say, well she gets her hair done and her nails/pedicure, so lets give her a problem about that. I defiantely do not want to bring attention to myself. Also, whats the dress code for the 341?
I didn't read all the numerous postings on here to rsepond directly to you but being female and keeping my nails and personal appearance nice for on the job, etc. you don't have to make yourself look like a homeless person on the street. Most people filing BK are business everyday people working jobs that may require uniforms, clean/cut nails, business attire, etc., nice hair, good grooming and if you work in a job where your hands are visible all the time and you need to look halfway decent if in an office setting or work with the public, I would not worry about it. I continued having my nails done during our Chapter 13 and also hair but what I did was not go as often and learned to do a few things myself and you will find you can do your own pedicures yourself or have friends/family help. It does save costs. I have a family member who is a beautician/haidresser do my hair once a month (highlights/trim) but she charges me next to nothing cause I am her Aunt. The cost of regular highlighting and cuts in a salon is outrageous. There are ways to cut costs around the whole process.

I would treat going to your 341 as if you were going to a job intereview. I would be cleanly dressed, avoid the jewelry and just be yourself.
