    Filed Chapter 7 in 2005

My job is on the line, and I am worried sick that I will not be able to retain another one at my current salary due to my bankruptcy filing.

Obviously, if they check credit it will be on there for another 7 years, but do you think 3 years later, it will have as much impact on anything related to the hiring process? (I know it is ILLEGAL to discriminate because of BK, but we all know that there are ways to get around that.)

I live in Ohio, which is taking quite the hit, so I think enough of my competitors in the job market will have recent repos, foreclosure, and/or bankruptcy on their reports too, but I am juts nervous about this in a time that there aren't that many jobs.

I need some encouragement I guess.

99% of the time, BK is a NON-ISSUE in the hiring process. A person is a greater risk to an employer if they owe a lot of people money and are in deep collection (i.e. junk debt buyers, lawsuits, etc). BK cleans up your credit report.

Like you, I worried about my Chapter 7 filing being an issue in the hiring process. I started my new job just last week. My new new employer did a background check and on the copy of the report that I received the BK was listed plain as day right in the middle of the report. I still got the job and it is a high paying Manager position. I hope this is some encouragement to you.

Might become an issue if the poster is applying for some kind of money related position, bookkeeper, bank clerk or any other finance related job.

Even then...this whole idea that BK keeps you from getting a job in certain industries is more myth than reality. It's propegated by the industries that don't want you to file BK, i.e. lenders, realtors, and debt settlement firms.

Granted, on the margins...if their are two equally qualified candidates (which almost never happens), the employer is more likely on a subjective basis to take the candidate that did not file BK so long as that persons credit report is normal.

The purpose of pulling the credit report is for the employer to assess risk.
