How to exempt social security funds.....

I'm trying to figure out how exactly to exempt social security funds that are in a bank account. My in-laws would be using the Texas exemptions and there is no wildcard for Texas. Is the correct law 42 U.S.C. 407 under the federal non-bankruptcy exemptions?

Also, if they have some money from another source, would that bungle up the exemption due to co-mingling? If so, how do they correct that problem? Do they need to wait a while to file?
