I just did not want this amount to be turned into an asset, so that is why I thought about selling...appreciate the help

I don't think it would be a problem, at least it wasn't for us. I needed to sell a small amount of stock, about 2K, to pay for property taxes. The attorney told me it was a necessary expense and would not be problem. We sold the stock the same month we filed and payed the taxes about a week before we filed.
