Hi! The means test determines whether there is a presumption of abuse that would prevent you from qualifying for a Chap 7. It is described in detail at http://www.nolo.com/legal-encycloped...ity-29907.html And there is a link to the "means test calculator". Keep in mind that an attorney may very well come up with a different result than you do. But, it's a good way to get an idea of whether you qualify. Also, even if you pass the means test, a trustee could object to a Chapter 7 if it appears "based on the totality of circumstances" that you have the ability to fund a Chap 13.
