    Filing Taxes

Hi. Our chapter 7 bankruptcy was discharged in November 2013. Last year I did our taxes with online software and a 1040A federal return was filed through that software. I am sitting down to do our 2014 taxes and see that if you were a debtor of a bankruptcy dated after October 2005 you must use form 1040. I have two questions. Do I need to amend last years taxes? When I did our taxes online I just entered the information and the software chose the form. My second question is, will I need to file using form 1040 for the rest of our lives, or is it just for the year after you file?

Thank you so much for your help!!!

Actually, it says if you ARE a debtor. That says to me that once the case is closed, you can file a 1040A. But, this is the first I've ever heard of this and I don't really know.

I suggest you call the IRS and ask:

    Telephone Assistance for Individuals:
    Toll-Free, 800-829-1040
Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. your local time (Alaska & Hawaii follow Pacific Time).

Filed Chap 13 April 2010. Discharged May 2015.
$143,000 in debt discharged for $36,500, including attorneys fees. Money well spent!
