How Do you Record Phone Calls?

How do you record a conversation on the phone and what kind of equipment does one need?

    #2
I recently changed to using my speaker phone on my Motorola cell phone and use an Olympus digital voice recorder. I simply lay the recorder down by the phone and press record. The recorder is smaller than my cell phone but it holds about 12 hours of recordings. I then download the recordings and save as .wav files.

I don't know what the sampling rate is or the operating megahertz of the recorder, but the clarity is superb.

I recently purchased a very nice speaker phone for my office and it also does an amazing job of transferrign sound to the recorder.

I now have a collection of some of the most baffling and confused representatives of one of the big national credit card companies. These are hilarious. At one point in a conversation, I spend two minutes helping the "representative" find the correct English word. What I hope to find helpful in case of a suit is that none of the options for dealing with this debt are consistent among several different calls. It makes it sound as if no one has any idea about what kind of programs are available, or what the rules are. Perhaps someday these accounts will go to an attorney and I can forward him my recordings of the incredibly confusing conversations I've had with his/her client.

I'm also thinking of sending them off to my congress persons and senators, as I understand the big bad boys I'm speaking of have come under questioning by some folks in congress. Or, maybe I'm dreaming.

If you ever plan on using these records, you should make sure that it is legal to record phone conversations in your state (unless, of course, you advsce them at the start of the call that the phone conversation is being recorded, then it does not matter).

Any tape recorder works fine as long as your phone has a speaker phone. I just put an ordinary tape recorder up next to my phone and whenever a creditor calls, I start the tape recorder rolling and push the speaker phone button. It works great for me. It also works well for cell phones with a speaker phone.

The other great thing about using the speaker phone is then my friends and relatives can join in on the conversation and yell at the debt collector. It gets the debt collector very upset when he or she hears other voices. They want to think that they are in control of the phone call, but when other people are talking to them and hearing the conversation, they lose control and get very upset. They know that they will probably say something illegal and they don't like the idea of other people hearing what they are saying. Especially when the other people start laughing at them and yelling at them. It's a lot of fun.

And yes, always tell them you are recording the telephone call and say the date and time so you have a record of exactly when they called and what they said.

Usually when they find out they are being tape recorded, they will hang up. It also gets them very upset.
          The world's simplest C & D Letter:
"I demand that you cease and desist from any communication with me."
Notice that I never actually mention or acknowledge the debt in my letter.

Whenever I call a creditor their recording comes on with the crap that they are recording this call for "quality purposes" and some other crap. So they're recording you, no matter what. I should be free to record them too.

Its legal in CO as long as one person in the conversation is aware its being recorded.

Its also legal in OR if only one party is aware that the conversation is being recorded; including the calling party.
