I transport trucks for a living throughout the USA and Canada so I am gone most of the time. I am sometimes away a month or even more and nothing real predictable about my schedule. When I am home I live in California.
I am classified as an Independent Contractor. This means I am considered self-employed for tax purposes. Instead of a W-2 and taxes being withheld from my pay I need to do estimated taxes. Does that mean my pay is not garnishable?
The company I deal with most is headquartered in Canada and the people I deal with are all in Canada. Will that fact provide any protection if a judgment is ever entered against me.
My chequing and savings accounts have very low balances so very little can be taken from those. I have Roth IRA with two different institutions. I do not own the house I live in (I live with a relative) and my car, a 1997 Chevy Cavalier has no doubt depreciated considerably.
