    Collector calls for other people

I have a question about collectors. After I stopped paying my bills, of course I started getting collector calls. The only thing is, half of them weren't even for me. Do collectors think that people that don't pay their bills all decide to move in together??? Even since I've filed, I still get collector calls. It's just that none of them are for me! I had my phone number for a while before I stopped paying my credit cards, and never had a problem until afterwards. I was just wondering what everyone's experience has been...
    Filed Chapter 7 (08/17/10)
    341 Meeting (09/20/10)
    Discharge (11/30/10), Case Closed (01/18/11)

LOL!!!!!!!!!! yeap...we all move in together!!!

well, in fact we moved out of state...left NO forwarding address or phone. we got a new land line here, unlisted... and we kept seeing via caller id...BOA...Chase...Citi...etc etc...and we were like WHAT THE HECK??

finally ONE day i decided i have to pick up this phone and find out what the deal is.......LOL!!!!!!! the people who USE to have OUR NEW phone number owed EVERYONE and THEIR MOTHERS!!!!

when i picked up they kept calling me by the OLD people's name and i told them you are not even close in the alphabet!!! but they thought we were lying....FINALLY....i got a few supervisors on the phone...advised them to cross check the phone number and see that those people NO longer have this number....

so apparently....this is very wide spread!!!

We didn't have any problems with collectors calling until after we quit paying. So it probably isn't that our phone number used to belong to others who didn't pay their bills. I'm thinking that the collectors are thinking that we're making up names when we sign up for phone numbers, and so they call everyone with similar phone numbers who are already in their systems hoping they'll catch the right one!

well...when we had our OLD number one of us, which shall remain nameless use to love to play with the collectors...many were so frustrated by the time the call was coming to a close, they would just hand up.

After reading about all that, I was kind of disappointed when our calls stopped after filing! You all have such great suggestions on handling the calls, and I didn't even get a chance to use them!

I suspect the collectors are still gathering data on us - indirectly.

They call asking for Joe Blow knowing very well they are calling John Deadbeat. They try getting me to verify my name, address and whatever else they can squeeze out of me - data mining.

Before I had credit problems I ha no calls from various collectors, now that I have filed, I get calls all of the time but for Joe Blow not for John Deadbeat.

I wondered that too BigJohn. However, the one that I was actually able to talk to asked if I was this other guy, and I said no. Then she asked if I knew how to get a hold of the other guy, and I told her I'd never heard of him. She then apologized and hung up. Maybe it's a combination of them trying to get more info about us and hoping they'll get someone else. Weird...

We moved and left no forwarding address and got an unlisted landline also. For about 4 months it was heavenly. Then our very aggressive credit union found us and wouldn't stop. A couple others followed soon after. That really put the fire under me to get my petition filed.

it is unreal how they can find you!!! we think it might be "banking"....but everything is supposed to be private...RIGHT!!!

and maybe, your right, it may have encouraged you to get it done and behind you, so maybe it was really for the best...

Believe it or not if we are the party in question we have the rights under FDCPA, however if we are not the debtor we have no rights in the matter. Kind of sucks doesn't it? My ex-wife got a $500 judgment against NCO in small claims (default) but I don't think she has ever been able to collect it or knows how. She got a lot of calls, some pretty mean all looking for some other person.
