you can trying calling up the creditor and asking if you they would accept a lower amount for settlement. Let's say you owe them $10,000, maybe you could offer than 5K. If you file bankruptcy, the creditor gets nothing in return. This is why debt settlement works. They rather get something rather than risk losing it all.

Just make sure if they accept your settlement offer, get it in writing first. Debt settlement can be done on your own but it can be very stressful and creditors/collectors are trained to take advantage of unexperienced people in this matter. This is why some people choose to use a professional debt settlement company

Few people who are in bankruptcy status will use a debt consolidation company. It adds more expense to what they already owe, and by the time they pay the company for handling it, very little is paid towards their debts. They are still subject to filing bankruptcy in the end..........

Debt collection companies can "hit" your credit report just as hard as a bankruptcy can...... because you are in "collections".............

Be very careful when choosing a "debt releif" company and make sure that this is the "right route" for you to take, not ust a "temporary fix"..........

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.
