Can you get a job with a huge debt and no bk yet?

just curious if anyone has gotten a job while having a huge debt(let's say like 100k)and has not filed bankruptcy yet

i'm sure some sensitive areas, won't hire you(like banks, law enforcement, etc)

but who has gotten hired, and what field? thanks!

It's not the amount of the debt, it's how it is handled and the type of debt. If all that debt is being properly paid and on time with no late or nonpayments and no evidence of robbing Peter to pay Paul (i.e., monthly cash advances in distinctive amounts with the debt just increasing), that shows you can afford your bills and are diligent in taking care of paying bills on time. If you have many late or nonpayments and other negative information showing, depending on the job involved that can work against you.

I can tell you from doing contract work at a major bank back in the late 90's that they would not hire anyone with bad credit. I was right there when they reviewed a summer intern's application and credit report pull and due to late payments she had on several accounts, they would not consider her.

I can vouch for the fact that I was hired at a NYC investment bank last year with about $70K total debt. Of course, being terminated from that job led to my current financial crisis, but as for being hired, with all debts being paid on time...no problem.

I had an application in at the place I have a PT job with, a community college library, and I had been with them 5 years. I put in for a FT position that became available in April, that I really wanted and with my history and experience thought I had a good shot at. But I didn't get it, it went to a younger man. So, I don't know whether it was my age, 56 next month, or the BK.

I've just recently been hired by a very well known bank out here in CA.

Anyways, I've been hired on as a personal banker due in part because of my extensive sales background. Yes, it's a little contradictory to the fact that I am giving people financial advice LOL. However, I feel I am a very good individual to talk to because I've seen and experience both ends of the financial spectrum.

The background check went deep and yes my credit is messed up big time and I owe a lot. They still hired me though and I plan on filling my BK7 in a month.

You can't not be hired due to the BK, even if your job involves security clearance. THe only time it can affect you is if, you have to be bonded and the bonding company won't bond someone with a recent BK. Also, certain jobs related to the SEC can avoid hiring you if you have bad credit, but not a BK per se. I would estimate that we file BK for 2 to 3 Police officers a month,

Your bank doesn't require being bonded?

They do require it. I had to pass the state insurance exam/notary exam/ and a few others to get the job.

I havn't filed BK yet, so that's why I think I passed the background check. It is my understanding that if I file BK in the next month or so I'll be fine because I'm allready bonded.

Oh, that makes sense now. I thought bank policy had changed since the time I worked in one.

agree, with this. AFAIK, it depends on the company you're applying...

If it is a job that requires security clearance a high level of debt compared to income can result in you not being hired. They then consider you a security risk.

I was afraid of that, but I did get hired in December for a job requiring very high security clearance. The background/criminal/credit checking took a month, and I was sure I was a goner. When I received a copy of the paperwork, I was very surprised to see that the only purpose of the credit check was to verify my ss#.

I have to consider this a minor miracle, however, and I would generally agree with JRScott's statement.
