I recently found out that sending a letter to my credit card companies asking them to cease and desist from calling me on my telephone simply doesn't work on the original creditor. Only Collection Agencies have to follow that rule. So, I made a big decision. I cancelled my telephone service from Qwest (a land line), and got a pay as you go cell phone from Net 10. It's a different number, so my CC's can't call me anymore. And there was no credit check and no deposit because it's pay as you go. It's more expensive than my old telephone-- 10 cents a minute, but I think it was worth it to stop the harassing phone calls. And I will never get a huge surprising bill in the mail, the phone will just turn off instantly if I don't keep it paid up.

True-rules are different for 3rd party collectors than for the original creditors. Most of my information is from personal experience or HOURS and HOURS of online research. When you're searching online, keep in mind there is no guarantee that the info is completely up to date, and your situation is unique from anyone else's. Do your homework, and consult with an attorney so you can make an informed decision.

If by chance you have cable modem service look into Vonage. I switched to them almost a year ago and it was one of the smartest moves I've made. I cut my home phone bill from over $100 to just under $30.
