Florida unemployment rate stays at 11.9% as state adds 6,900 jobs

for those of us living in florida...unemployment remains so high...this articile came out today and is also posted in the florida disscussion group area: http://www.bkforum.com/group.php?groupid=9

Florida's unemployment rate stayed unchanged at 11.9 percent in October with job growth still weak, the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation reported Friday morning.

In the Tampa Bay area, the numbers were more encouraging, with the jobless rate dropping from 12.4 percent to 11.8 percent in one month. Unlike state figures, the regional data is not seasonally adjusted and tends to fluctuate more month to month.

Florida created 6,900 net new jobs created over the month, a relatively mild 0.1 percent increase from September, but a step in the right direction. Compared with a year ago, Florida has added 33,700 jobs, or up a half percent. That's the strongest growth posted by the state since May 2007, before the recession took hold.

Cynthia Lorenzo, director of the Agency for Workforce Innovation, said the new jobs weren't the only sign of stabilization and growth. Florida also posted the largest drop in the country last week in the number of people filing first-time unemployment benefits.

"Combined with increasing numbers of job postings online, this is encouraging news for our job seekers and our economy," Lorenzo said.

Florida's unemployment peaked at a post World War II record of 12.3 percent in March, before gradually falling to as low as 11.4 percent in June, thanks in large part to part-time jobs created by the U.S. Census Bureau and the federal stimulus plan.

As the part-time jobs have gone away, the jobless rate has crept back up. Some economists predict it could approach the 12.3 percent record again as discouraged jobless sitting on the sidelines now re-enter the labor market.
