Be sure to research the companies first, I'm a firm believer that all insurance companies are not the same and the only time you'll find out is when you're in an accident. I have a no name one from the area ("mutual benefit company"), they are responsive, fair and cut you a check within days of your claim. Seems like what should be expected however I have heard nightmares out there.

^^^^^^^^ I certainly agree with the above statement. Through all my saga with getting homeowner's insurance--the various companies are VERY different with different underwriters, and different sets of questions they ask.
I always advise going to your local independent insurance agent. They represent several different companies, and can match you with a 'best fit' suited for your particular situation and needs.
You should go in person. This is not something that is always easier to do by phone or online."To go bravely forward is to invite a miracle."

well actually i thought my dh was nuts when he said call AAA and see what they can do. i said they don't do auto insurance. well i certainly was incorrect. they just act as agents without that terrible added costs factor. they were excellent to work with and found us the cheapest rates with a good choice of companies. we also have been members for over 20 years and have used their roadside service and that is great to have.Originally posted by EandGWZ View PostI just joined AAA and I'm due to switched insurance companies due to an upcoming move. I appreciate you sharing this information with the board.8/4/2008

that's one of the reasons we choice the middle of the state ( I HATE IT HERE!) but it was where we could afford, a homeowners was a huge deciding factor on that one. we know someone in venice fl, true story, a 700 sq foot condo on the coast pays over $600 MONTHLY on homeowners! no way.
AAA does not handle our homeowners ONLY our auto. i have florida family or something like that.8/4/2008
